Liverpool have been in talks to strengthen their defense ahead of the transfer window, which closes on February 2nd.
Liverpool are facing an injury crisis in their defense
As the defending Premier League champions, this season has not been what many expected from Liverpool. With the exception of Hugo Ekitike, most of Liverpool’s other big-money signings this summer have struggled with form, fitness or both at Anfield so far.
Top target: Liverpool in talks to sign biggest contract since Ekitike for £69m
FSG are struggling with a number of issues as Liverpool continue to deceive under Arne Slott.
There is a lot of focus on Liverpool’s defensive options as the possibility of further additions continues to emerge.
The club had targeted Marc Guehi prior to his move to Manchester City, but were left with few suitable senior centre-back options.
Elsewhere in the defense, Jeremy Frimpong has faced injury problems since joining in the summer, while Conor Bradley is out for the season after picking up an injury against Arsenal.
Ahead of the Premier League clash with Newcastle United, Slott revealed little about his team’s plans until the end of the game, saying according to the BBC:We will mention players that we think can help us and if the numbers are achievable, we will do that. These are conversations that take place not far from here, but not in this room.. ”
Now, with only a few days left in the winter transfer window, it is reported that Liverpool are holding talks over the possibility of signing him.
Liverpool hold ‘talks’ over signing right-back
Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on his official YouTube channel that Liverpool are in talks to sign one of Inter Milan’s star defenders. Romano said the Reds were “in discussions” about potentially bringing in a new right-back in the coming days, before specifically mentioning Denzel Dumfries.
“Liverpool had talks with Inter today. It was a club-to-club discussion with Inter. We have a very good relationship.”
“So, from what I hear, Liverpool have asked about the situation with Denzel Dumfries. The termination fee is not valid in January. The termination fee of around 20-25 million euros is valid only in the summer.”
“But my understanding of this story is that Liverpool asked about the player and the injury situation.”
With both Bradley and Frimpong injured, Liverpool feel it is essential to strengthen their right-back options. Denzel Dumfries has been an Inter player since 2021 and has consistently been a star player for the Italian giants, helping Inter reach two Champions League finals in three years from 2023 to 2025.
Dumfries is close to returning, but has missed most of this season with an ankle injury. According to Romano, Liverpool have “asked” Inter about the current situation at Dumfries, and the two clubs clearly share a good relationship. It was recently reported that the Italian giants want to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones to strengthen their side for the second half of the season.
Although there is interest in Dumfries, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will accept negotiations for his signature. Romano said the Reds want a loan but the Italian doesn’t want that. The Dutchman’s release clause only comes into effect in the summer, which could further dissuade Liverpool from making a bid. Slott’s side may well need more depth at right-back for the remainder of the season. But apparently they need to look elsewhere.
