NASCAR Pushes Bowman Gray Stadium Preseason Race to Monday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Due to icy and snowy conditions in the Winston-Salem area, NASCAR has delayed its preseason exhibition races at Bowman Gray Stadium until Monday night.

Originally, The Clash was set as a two-day event beginning Saturday, with the main race scheduled for Sunday night. However, anticipating bad weather, NASCAR reduced it to a one-day event on Sunday last week. When snow covered much of the Carolinas on Saturday, the organization decided to move the race to Monday.

“Safety is our top priority, especially during adverse weather,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR’s Executive Vice President and Chief Venue and Race Innovation Officer. “We were prepared for challenging conditions and appreciate the support from Winston-Salem and North Carolina officials in making the right call. Our team is working diligently to get ready for Monday’s race.”

Roadways in the area remain icy from a recent storm, with additional snowfall on Saturday morning and forecasts predicting up to 12 inches. Fan parking will become available Monday at 9 a.m., followed by practice and qualifying sessions starting at 11 a.m. The race itself is set to begin at 6 p.m. in what could be the coldest conditions NASCAR has ever faced.

Two-time champion Kyle Larson commented, “I’m not sure I’ve ever raced in this kind of cold, but fortunately, the stock car is like an oven, so it should be fine inside. I might even sweat a little in the car. I feel for the teams, fans, and everyone braving the cold, but this is part of the sport, and I’m excited for the challenge.”

Larson also mentioned she had not expected The Clash to take place on Sunday and had planned to spend the day sledding with her three kids.

Fan Take: While NASCAR and basketball are very different sports, this weather delay highlights how external factors can impact scheduling and player (or driver) preparedness. Basketball fans can appreciate the importance of flexibility and resilience, lessons that resonate across all competitive sports.
