Alexander Volkanovski Recognizes Diego Lopez’s Progress but Confesses He Did One Thing ‘Just for Laughs’

Alexander Volkanovski successfully defended his featherweight title at UFC 325, securing his second win over Diego Lopez at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. Known as “The Great,” Volkanovski delivered a dominant performance against one of the division’s toughest challengers, reaffirming his status as a top competitor at 145 pounds.

Following the victory, Volkanovski is already setting his sights on future objectives, aiming to make even quicker progress than he did after claiming the belt last year. He revealed that his ambition to push forward was an integral part of his fight strategy from the start.

Despite suffering a significant injury in the rematch on January 31, Diego Lopez showed improvement but was ultimately outmatched. Though Volkanovski absorbed fewer damaging hits compared to their first bout, he struggled to implement his desired grappling game, managing only two takedowns and just under three minutes of control across five rounds. Lopez’s enhanced strength and resilience made grappling attempts more challenging for Volkanovski, who admitted his opponent looked noticeably stronger during this camp.

Statistics from their initial encounter highlighted key areas Lopez needed to address, particularly on the offensive front. However, Volkanovski’s superior movement and timing again proved decisive, outstriking Lopez in every round except the first, which was evenly matched at 12 significant strikes each. As in their first fight, Lopez’s output dropped in the final round, while Volkanovski appeared to gain strength and close the fight strongly.

Fan Take: Volkanovski’s continued dominance cements his legacy as one of the featherweight greats, but Lopez’s improvements suggest the division remains highly competitive. This rivalry not only elevates the excitement for future matchups but also pushes the overall evolution of skill and strategy in the sport.
