  • John Duran aims to revive his career
  • Crystal Palace face Lille

Crystal Palace have been given a late-market opportunity to strengthen their attacking options, with reports claiming the club are being offered the chance to sign former Aston Villa striker John Duran before the January transfer window closes.

According to TEAMtalk, there has been a lot of movement behind the scenes regarding Duran’s short-term future.

French side Lille are said to be in talks to take over the striker’s loan for the remainder of the season and are thought to be in pole position.

However, agents were also actively approaching Premier League clubs, with Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United all aware of his potential.

John Duran aims to revive his career

Duran’s agent hopes to secure a move that will allow him to play regularly in the second half of the season, as Duran has struggled to establish himself since leaving Aston Villa.

While the switch from European football has brought financial and name recognition benefits, on-pitch involvement has been limited, a situation the club hope to improve with the 2026 World Cup cycle in mind.

The timing of the approach is particularly interesting for Crystal Palace.

The Eagles face growing uncertainty over the future of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has reportedly agreed a contract with AC Milan.

Mateta has been left out of Palace’s traveling squad for the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest, fueling speculation that his time at Selhurst Park is drawing to a close.

If Mateta leaves, Palace will clearly need reinforcements in attack. Durán’s profile provides a useful solution.

During his time at Aston Villa, the Colombian impressed with his physical presence, direct running and willingness to stretch the defence.

Although still inexperienced, his age and previous experience in England make him a logical choice compared to alternatives in an unfamiliar league.

Lille’s advantageous position suggests competition is fierce, but a return to the Premier League, especially one where he can start regularly, could be attractive for the player.

For Palace, this is not just about replacing a striker who could leave, but also maintaining attacking momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
