  • Messi is still deciding on the 2026 World Cup
  • Mascherano expects Messi to be included in Argentina’s squad
  • Messi aims to set new records
  • Messi’s contract with MLS extends to 2028

Although Lionel Messi has not yet formally confirmed his participation in the 2026 World Cup, his friend and coach at Inter Miami, Javier Mascherano, has hinted that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will play a key role for Argentina.

It has always been anticipated that Messi, who lifted the World Cup trophy in 2022, will lead his nation in at least one more major event.

Messi is still deciding on the 2026 World Cup

Currently playing in the United States, Messi is enjoying the thrill of victory after winning the MLS Cup in 2025. This means he may not be as sharp as his European counterparts when the FIFA tournament takes place in North America this summer.

He has expressed some concern, stating that he doesn’t want to be a “burden” to the national team, recognizing that he might not be at peak performance. However, his fresh legs could give him an advantage over some of his more fatigued rivals.

Mascherano expects Messi to be included in Argentina’s squad

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, remains optimistic about including Messi, with ongoing discussions between them. If he joins, Messi will continue to be a key figure in the number 10 role.

Mascherano, who played with Messi at both Barcelona and the national team and is now the head coach at Inter Miami, sees no reason why the aging star shouldn’t aim to defend his title.

When asked if Messi could reach a sixth World Cup final, Mascherano stated, “Yes, there is no reason not to.” He mentioned the possibility of Messi joining the ranks of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Guillermo Ochoa, should they also be selected.

Messi aims to set new records

Mascherano notes that he sees Messi every day and understands the condition he is in. “I like to be close to the players and understand how they feel,” he said, recognizing the players know their own bodies best.

Regarding Argentina’s chances of winning the World Cup again, Mascherano stated: “Argentina will approach the World Cup in the best possible way. They have been competing at a high level for a long time and possess exceptional talent.”

Messi has already set the record for the most World Cup appearances at 26 and looks poised to increase his international caps to 196.

When discussing the possibility of defending Argentina’s title in 2026, Messi said: “I hope I can be there. In the worst-case scenario, I’ll be watching live, but it will be special. The World Cup is unique for any country, especially for us since we experience it differently.”

He also mentioned his talks with Scaloni: “We have discussed it, and he always expresses his desire for me to be involved in some capacity. We have a trusting relationship that allows for open communication.”

Messi’s contract with MLS extends to 2028

Messi opted not to participate in the Finalissima match against Spain, where he was set to play against the young Barcelona star, Lamine Yamal. This match is scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium, the site of the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

As he evaluates his future, the prospect of international retirement looms, yet he has signed a contract extension with MLS champions Inter Miami until 2028, ensuring his ongoing commitment to the club.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it not only hints at the potential for Messi to grace the 2026 World Cup stage but also underscores the enduring legacy of one of the greatest players. His participation could elevate the tournament’s profile and inspire a new generation of fans, enriching the sport’s narrative.
