Tottenham’s defensive mainstay Cristian Romero is set to “leave” the club in the upcoming June transfer window, according to Argentine journalist and reliable South American source Gastón Edur.
Speaking to X, Edur revealed that the 27-year-old World Cup winner has already attracted concrete interest from La Liga powerhouses and at least one other major European league.
“Christy Cuti Romero has attracted interest from La Liga in Spain and other leagues. He already had interest in the last transfer window and they were very close to making a formal offer. He will leave Tottenham in the June transfer window next year.”
Cristian Romero slams Tottenham as ‘disgraceful’ after deadline day
News of his summer departure comes at a time of heightened tension between the player and the club.
Tottenham came back from two points behind to draw 2-2 with Manchester City on Sunday, despite playing against a Spurs side who were suffering from an injury crisis and were physically weak.
Tottenham’s captain waited until the transfer window closed before launching a sophisticated attack on Spurs’ lack of transfer activity, labeling the lack of players “incredible but true and a disgrace”.
With only 11 senior players available for this match, Romero’s public outburst suggests deep-seated dissatisfaction with the club’s current direction under manager Thomas Frank.
Real Madrid wants to sign Romero
This isn’t the first time Romero has expressed dissatisfaction. He has expressed dissatisfaction with Tottenham’s hierarchy in the past, as well as their lack of accountability and ambition.
Recent comments have further accelerated talk of leaving. Real Madrid have long been interested in the World Cup winner, and recent reports suggest that Madrid are preparing a big offer for Romero.
Mickey van de Ven also rumored to be at Liverpool
To make matters worse for the North London side, Romero’s central defense partner Micky van de Ven has also been targeted by his rivals.
Liverpool are considering a move for the Dutch defender as Arne Slott looks to strengthen their backline, according to reports.
Losing both of their starting centre-backs in a single period would be a devastating blow to Tottenham as they look to navigate an increasingly turbulent 2026 season.
