Pittsburgh Penguins face off against New York Islanders: Lineup updates and viewing guide

The Pittsburgh Penguins saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to the Ottawa Senators on Monday night. However, they are now focused on their most significant regular-season game so far against the New York Islanders on Tuesday, which could have major playoff implications.

This matchup might be the Penguins’ biggest game since April 13, 2024, when they faced the Boston Bruins with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance. A victory in regulation would give Pittsburgh a four-point lead over the Islanders with just two games left in the season. Conversely, if the Islanders win in regulation, they would leapfrog the Penguins into second place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Islanders are entering this game after losing their last two contests, including a 4-1 defeat to the Washington Capitals on Monday. They’ll have Ilya Sorokin back between the pipes, which is a significant boost, as he is arguably the best goalie in the NHL this season. Sorokin has excelled in covering their defensive gaps, with 27 saves on goals allowed, a .916 save percentage, and a 2.44 goals-against average.

Rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer is making a strong impact, tallying 15 goals and 37 points across 56 games, showcasing impressive skating and defensive skills. Also, don’t overlook Matthew Barzal, whose exceptional edgework has led to 15 goals and 47 points in 55 games. Meanwhile, Bo Horvat, a recent addition to Team Canada’s Olympic roster, has scored 21 goals and collected 35 points in 42 games this season.

The Penguins will welcome Brian Rust back after serving a three-game suspension, a boost that could energize Sidney Crosby. Crosby has struggled somewhat lately, so the return of Rust and other linemates may lift his play.

Expected starting goaltenders include Stuart Skinner for the Islanders, after Artur Silovs played on Monday. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT and HBO Max, with radio coverage on 105.9 “The X.”
