Denny Hamlin Faces Another Shoulder Tear; Surgery Delayed Until November

Denny Hamlin, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver, has re-injured his shoulder after having arthroscopic surgery following the 2023 season. Despite the pain and previous immobility that hampered his performance late last year, Hamlin does not intend to have surgery on his right shoulder until after the current season concludes. He revealed that he first noticed issues with his shoulder after the 2025 season, coinciding with a fall amid the wreckage of his parents’ home, which was destroyed by fire in December. Tragically, his terminally ill father passed away in the fire, and his mother sustained serious burns.

“I don’t believe it healed properly,” Hamlin said ahead of a NASCAR preseason practice delayed by snow. He explained that after a minor fall while clearing debris at his mother’s house, doctors recommended another surgery, which would require him to miss several months of racing. Hamlin weighed the option of immediate surgery, causing him to miss the first part of the racing season, versus delaying the procedure until the offseason, and decided on the latter.

At 45 years old, Hamlin noted that his shoulder is in better shape now than it was in late 2023, but he remains cautious. He’s limiting activities that exacerbate his symptoms, describing the injury as a partially torn shoulder with some fragments still lingering, which necessitates careful management until it can be fully repaired next November. Despite these challenges, Hamlin is focused on maintaining his physical condition and mileage to prepare for his eventual surgery.

Mentally, Hamlin acknowledged the difficulty of balancing personal tragedy and professional expectations. With 60 Cup wins but still no championship trophy, he admitted his season could unfold in drastically different ways depending on his performance and mindset. “These tough times build character. It’s how you respond that counts,” he said, emphasizing his determination to make the most of the remaining years in his career.

Hamlin also expressed perspective on his hardships, recognizing that many in the NASCAR community face their own struggles. He highlighted the broader impact of tragedy during the offseason, including untold stories among crew members and families. Encouragingly, his mother is recovering both physically and mentally in Florida, though he acknowledged the road to healing will be gradual.

Fan Take: This update on Hamlin’s resilience shines a light on the human side of NASCAR, where drivers face more than just competition—they deal with real-life challenges that test their grit and passion. His commitment to pushing through adversity will inspire fans and adds depth to the sport, reminding us that the journey is as compelling as the race itself.
