Is Shohei Ohtani Set to Take the Field in the 2026 World Baseball Classic?

Shohei Ohtani emerged as the standout player in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Representing Japan, Ohtani showcased exceptional skills, batting .435/.606/.739 with an OPS of 1.345, accumulating 10 hits, including 4 doubles and a home run, alongside 8 RBIs. On the pitching side, he compiled a 2-0 record with a 1.86 ERA, striking out 11 batters over 9⅔ innings. His highlight came in the championship game against the United States, where he preserved a win by securing a reverse save against former Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout in the ninth inning. This remarkable performance earned Ohtani the tournament MVP honors.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Ohtani is confirmed on Japan’s 30-man roster, marking his third appearance after playing in 2017 and 2023. However, manager Dave Roberts announced in January that Ohtani will not pitch in the tournament, opting instead to serve solely as Japan’s designated hitter — a choice Ohtani himself made. On the mound, Japan will rely on ’ star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who impressed in the 2023 Classic with 12 strikeouts and only two runs allowed in two games, and who brings a strong resume as a two-time World Series champion.

Fan Take: Shohei Ohtani’s continued involvement with Japan, even in a limited role, underscores his enduring impact on international baseball and highlights the growing importance of the World Baseball Classic as a stage for top MLB talent. With rising stars like Yamamoto stepping up, the event promises to elevate global interest in the sport while showcasing the next generation of baseball’s elite.
