Unveiling McLaren’s MCL40: The Secret Behind the Other F1 Title Winner’s Design

McLaren has provided insights into the design of its 2026 Formula 1 car, the MCL40. The reigning world champions revealed the new livery on Monday as they prepare to defend both the constructors’ and drivers’ titles earned in the previous season.

The MCL40 initially appeared on track during a closed-door shakedown in Barcelona, sporting a special stealth test livery. Its official 2026 colors will be showcased for the first time during the first of two three-day pre-season tests starting Wednesday in Bahrain.

At the team’s online season launch from the Bahrain International Circuit, McLaren’s chief designer Rob Marshall shared detailed updates about the car. He explained that the front wing maintains an arrowhead shape like the last generation but is positioned slightly lower and features wider footplates and endplates. The front wing also functions similarly to the old DRS system, with flaps on both the front and rear wings that open to reduce drag, boosting top speeds on straights. This new straight-line mode offers teams plenty of scope for innovation, so expect varied approaches across the grid.

Marshall also discussed the redesigned nose and collision structure, highlighting new regulations requiring part of the front wing and nose to detach upon minor impacts, while the remaining structure continues to protect the driver in subsequent collisions. The front suspension builds on last year’s innovative design with several modifications aimed at performance gains.

Moving toward the car’s rear, the chassis has been engineered to meet tougher homologation standards and rigorous crash tests, demanding extensive research and development to ensure durability. Space constraints were a challenge for fitting radiators and electrical components due to the car’s compact design, but a slightly smaller fuel tank means less fuel is needed per race, helping with packaging.

From an aerodynamic standpoint, the MCL40 has abandoned the curved underfloor found on last season’s car in favor of a flatter-bottom design, similar to the previous generation. The rear suspension evolves from last year’s setup, with a redesigned, lighter, and more compact gearbox providing added benefits. The rear wing resembles last year’s design but now uses a two-pylon mount and works in harmony with the front wing’s aerodynamic system.

When asked about the toughest part of designing the MCL40, Marshall noted that coordinating the timing of decisions with last year’s development, especially while competing for the championship, was the biggest challenge. Deciding when to fully commit to this new project was a critical and difficult call.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella expressed confidence that their development choices struck the right balance between chasing championship success and managing resources effectively. He remains optimistic that the MCL40 will be a strong contender in the upcoming season.

Fan Take: For racing enthusiasts, McLaren’s detailed insight into the MCL40 underscores how cutting-edge innovation and strategic compromises shape championship-winning cars. This news signals that the 2026 F1 season will showcase fierce competition driven by technical creativity, promising thrilling on-track battles.
