  • Real Madrid wary: Christy Romero wants to leave Tottenham
  • Romero dissatisfied with Tottenham’s lack of ambition
  • Romero has no shortage of suitors

Cristian Romero is reportedly unhappy with Tottenham Hotspur’s pecking order and could make a high-profile exit this summer.

According to Argentine media outlet TyC Sports, the relationship between the World Cup winner and the Tottenham board has reached a climax, with one of the world’s best defenders firmly on the market.

Real Madrid wary: Christy Romero wants to leave Tottenham

Real Madrid’s main goal for the 2026-27 season is to find a world-class central defender.

Romero has shown outstanding individual performances this season and is now a “concrete option” for the Spanish giants.

According to reports, Madrid are willing to offer more than €100 million for the 27-year-old’s aggressive front-foot defender, seeing him as the perfect successor to the legendary leadership of players like Sergio Ramos.

Romero dissatisfied with Tottenham’s lack of ambition

The Argentine’s frustration stems from what he perceives as the Tottenham board’s lack of sporting planning and ambition.

Romero, who took over the captaincy following the departure of Son Heung-min, recently caused a controversy on social media when he described the club’s lack of winter transfer activity as “shameful”.

After the recent 2-2 draw with Manchester City, Romero posted that it was “embarrassing” that the squad had only 11 healthy senior players left due to poor recruitment.

Manager Thomas Frank claimed the matter had been “handled internally”, but the public outcry suggests a rift in the captain’s relationship with the club’s decision-makers.

Romero has no shortage of suitors

Apart from Real Madrid, Barcelona have also been linked with a move for Romero and are monitoring the situation closely.

Atletico Madrid have shown strong interest in signing him in the past two transfer windows and could make a move in the summer.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ Premier League rivals Manchester United are also being asked to sign the World Cup winner.
