Grand National Champion Jockey Takes on Argentina’s Grueling Endurance Race for Charity: The Ultimate Challenge for Horse and Rider

Former National Hunt amateur jockey Sam Whaley-Cohen is set to participate in the Argentine Gaucho Derby to raise funds for Oxford Children’s Hospital, as reported by the Racing Post. This grueling 310-mile race, known as “the greatest equestrian test on earth,” takes place in southern Argentina, where riders navigate challenging terrain on sturdy local horses, with vet checks and horse change stations positioned throughout the course.

The event kicks off on February 18th and lasts for ten days. According to Racing Post, Whaley-Cohen has already raised £75,000, with an additional £25,000 pledged through matched donations. Whaley-Cohen described the race as the ultimate challenge for both horse and rider, akin to the Mongol Derby, saying, “What could be better than riding a horse, finding a willing partner, and challenging yourself to the best of your ability?”

He further explained that the race involves choosing routes across barely marked land while trusting the horse’s instincts. “We’re sharing a genuine experience of camping in the wilderness for ten days and covering extraordinary ground. Hopefully, the riders won’t make too many careless mistakes,” he added.

Whaley-Cohen ended his racing career on a high note by winning the last race at the 2022 Grand National at Aintree on the 50-1 outsider Noble Yates. Notably, in the 2010 G1 King George VI Chase, he upset the legendary British steeplechaser Cout Star, achieving an impressive streak of nine wins and two losses.
