Managing a horse racing syndicate demands significant organizational skills, but Harlan Malter of Iron Horse Racing Stables notes that there are important aspects of his role that the public often doesn’t fully grasp. In the second part of an exclusive video Q&A available to Paulick Report Insider Patreon members, Malter sheds light on these nuances and more.
Malter, a founding partner of Saposh and Malter Financial Planning in New York, established the Iron Horse Racing Stables Ownership Syndicate in 2007. Over the next decade, he steadily grew the syndicate alongside a close-knit yet expanding group of partners. The stable gained national and international recognition in the mid-2010s thanks to the achievements of Bucchero, a multiple stakes winner who competed in prestigious races like the Breeders’ Cup and Royal Ascot before retiring as the highest-earning Indiana-bred horse ever. Today, Iron Horse Racing Stables includes partners located throughout the United States.
Bucchero’s success also propelled Malter into the stallion market, leading to the creation of the New York-based Iron Horse Stallions. Here, Malter manages Bucchero’s breeding career, which anchors a breeding program featuring a four-time All Value Sire team member.
In Part 2 of the interview, Malter answers several key questions, including:
- What do you wish industry insiders better understood about managing a racing syndicate?
- What considerations influence the setting of stud fees?
- When evaluating stallion statistics, how much data is necessary before accepting it as reliable?
