Aston Villa have been riding the crest of a wave in recent years under Unai Emery, but the Spaniard’s incredible efforts in the dugout are being undermined by the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability (PSR) rules.
According to the Deloitte Football Money League 2026, the Midlands side face sanctions over issues complying with financial restrictions despite recording record revenues of more than £390m in the 2024/25 season.
Despite their problems, the Villans are outsiders in the Premier League title race and a business month is just around the corner.
The team needs to bring out individual talent while maintaining its overall structure, and Morgan Rogers will be key in that regard. But could financial difficulties put his long-term position at Villa Park in jeopardy?
Latest information on Rodgers’ Aston Villa future
Over the past few years, Rodgers, 23, has developed into one of the Premier League’s best players. Fans will be hoping the England international continues to excel for many years to come, with analyst Ben Mattinson praising his “absolutely ridiculous” quality.
Roger has always been a part of Emery’s attacking system. Last year, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher hailed him as “unstoppable” in front of goal, and his quality remains undiminished in 2025/26.
But Rodgers’ incredible form is attracting suitors from the upper echelons. Liverpool and Chelsea are both interested and have already held initial talks.
This is one of the best players in the Premier League and Aston Villa will only let him leave if it is important.

Indeed, previous reports suggested his price tag was set at £87 million, and while NSWE hopes this will deter suitors, interest is unlikely to disappear.
Why Emery found a new Rodgers
Last month, Ollie Watkins waxed lyrical about Rodgers’ skills as a dynamic attacking midfielder, even claiming he has what it takes to play for a club like Real Madrid.
If that happens, Emery will need to find a replacement, but luckily he already has Brazilian prospect Alisson. Alisson joined the club from Brasileiro Serie A side Gremo for just under £11 million in January.
Described by Emery as an “intense” player, Villa’s coaches were immediately impressed by the youngster’s speed and power. There’s a lot of room for improvement, but his ceiling is high and fans have plenty of reason to be excited.
The 19-year-old made his first-team debut in the last Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion, and although it was a cameo that did little in terms of notable performances, he showed energy, enthusiasm and the level of physicality that the Premier League will demand from him for years to come.
Like Rodgers, the promising player is comfortable playing on the wing, but tends to play his best football as a number 10, playing away from center forward, creating chances and winning duels.
His 2025 campaign in his home country highlighted just that, with the teenager winning an average of six duels per game while covering a tremendous amount of ground up and down the right channel.
Although he has yet to find clinical form in front of goal, Alisson could prove to be the complete package when he does. In that respect, he will likely emulate Rodgers, who has scored just three goals in 16 games since joining Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024.
The rest, as they say, is history.
