Tottenham Hotspur issued a firm warning to London rivals Chelsea in the January transfer window, refusing to make an approach for Swedish sensation Lukas Bergvall.
The Athletic reports that the Blues, along with Aston Villa, have made direct contact with Spurs to test their resolve regarding the 20-year-old midfielder.

Despite Bergvall’s reduced minutes this season, Tottenham officials have reportedly made it clear there are “no plans” to consider him leaving the club, with the player considered a non-negotiable element in the club’s long-term future.
Tottenham reject Chelsea’s approach to sign Lukas Bergvall
The interest from Stamford Bridge is reportedly due to Bergvall’s reduced role under former head coach Thomas Frank.
The Dane, who was recently relieved of his duties, has often used the natural central midfielder to play in wider areas or as a rotation option following the arrival of Conor Gallagher.
Realizing his potential, Chelsea explored the possibility of a permanent deal to strengthen their young midfield project.
However, Spurs quickly rejected these advances. The north London hierarchy remain convinced of Bergvall’s ‘generational’ potential, especially given his contract runs until 2031.
With Igor Tudor appointed as interim manager, the club are hoping that he will have a more consistent role in his preferred central position and eliminate external noise.
Bergvall’s time at Tottenham since ignoring Barcelona
Bergvall’s journey at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been a whirlwind, having famously turned down a move to Barcelona in 2024.
At the time, the Catalan giants were seen as favorites to win the title, but succumbing to the lure of the Premier League, the “unstoppable” Swede opted for the N17.
His debut season was nothing short of spectacular. He was named the club’s player of the year and played a key role in Spurs’ Europa League victory over Manchester United.
The 2025/26 season has been more difficult due to a change in tactics and a recent ankle injury, but he remains a fan favorite.
