Newcastle keen to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta
Mick Brown said: “Mateta is definitely on Newcastle’s radar. He looks like he’ll be available, Palace would be happy to let him go and I’m sure there’s a lot of clubs that are going to be looking at him and keeping an eye on him.”
“He has been performing in the Premier League for Palace for a few years now, showing that he can score goals and his track record proves how good he is.
“He is also a French international. So where are we going to get a striker like that? Especially one who is available and who knows the league.”
“Newcastle have always prioritized that and Eddie Howe prefers to sign players with a proven track record in the Premier League to reduce adaptation time.
“Newcastle want to sign a new striker, a goalscorer, because the options they have at the moment are not consistent enough and are struggling.
“I don’t think Mateta is the perfect forward. There are some concerns about him, but Newcastle’s scout team will weigh the pros and cons.”
Mateta could be a useful option
Newcastle have already invested in two strikers at the start of the season and it will be interesting to see if they are willing to sign the 28-year-old from Crystal Palace.
Mateta was heavily linked with a move from Crystal Palace at the start of the season and again in January. But he remains at Palace for now.
The striker has scored 10 goals this season and there is no doubt that he could be a very lucrative signing for Newcastle if a deal goes through.
The French international has consistently shown his quality in the Premier League, and he is certainly capable enough to play at Newcastle.
The opportunity to join them could be exciting for him. They have ambitious projects and are one of the richest clubs in the world.
Newcastle have had a disappointing season and are fighting for a place in the top half. Increasing the quality of the attacking units will only lead to further improvements in the attacking units. Whether they can complete the deal remains to be seen.
