Sunderland have enjoyed a fantastic run of form this season, with Tuesday night’s win over Leeds United taking Regis Le Bris’ side to the 40-point mark in the Premier League.

The Black Cats spent a lot of money after securing promotion to the top flight last year, but they are no outliers in that respect. But the difference is that many costumes end up ruined after spending exorbitant amounts of money, which hasn’t been the case in the past.

Currently in a strong and stable position, Sunderland are likely to play in the Premier League again next season, in which case they could bring in more top players alongside the likes of Granit Xhaka, Enzo Le Fe and Robin Roofs.

However, Brian Brobby has been absent from the striker position for the past two games and has lost his presence.

Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidore have finished ninth in recent weeks. The former scored against Bournemouth, but his passing and anticipation left something to be desired. Despite being a strong central player, Isidore has only scored four goals in 26 games.

This should be one of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ main priorities at the end of the season if Sunderland want to take another break and build on next season.

Now, according to TEAMtalk, the Wearsiders are among the suitors who have been kept up to date on the situation of Juventus forward Jonathan David, who will be allowed to leave the Allianz Stadium if the old lady can find a replacement.

The 26-year-old Canadian left Lille when his contract expired last year and joined the Italians on a free transfer. However, he is not completely settled, with a number of Premier League clubs showing interest and the forward revealing in 2022 that he would like to play in England’s top flight, which he believes is the best in the world, “someday”.

What Jonathan David brings to Sunderland

Sunderland have a great team but are perhaps lacking a first-class goalscorer. In David’s case, they will be getting a player who has the ability to score so many goals throughout the season, in which he could even become their own version of Alexander Isak.

Isak signed for Liverpool in a deal worth £125 million, the most expensive player in British history, and currently does not play for Newcastle United. But he is undoubtedly one of Europe’s best goalscorers and the Magpies’ poor performance this season could be a byproduct of the summer sale.

Life in Italy had a slow start for David. But he became stronger. After scoring just one goal in the first four months of the Serie A season, the Canadian centre-forward has now scored four goals and provided three assists in his last 11 games.

In fact, there are some stylistic similarities between each center forward. His international teammate Jonathan Osorio hailed him as a “superstar” for his time in France, while Canadian soccer expert Tony Marinaro, who scored 109 goals and 31 assists in just 232 games for France, further praised him as “one of the best strikers in the world.”

Furthermore, his link-up play is on a par with the Swedish striker. Last season in Ligue 1, he created eight big chances and recorded a pass success rate of 83% and a dribbling success rate of 50%.

David has quite a track record in front of goal. If Sunderland can get him to dance to Le Bris tunes and emulate his former club rival Isak, it will bode well for their long-term project.

After all, Isaac is one of the best forwards in the business and this would be a real statement of intent to lift Sunderland to greater heights and confirm that they are more than just a one-hit wonder at the big time.

David will ultimately pick up his option this summer, but Sunderland have shown they have built a balanced and progressive team, which could benefit everyone involved.
