Manchester United are a club set to undergo a major shake-up in the summer, with a number of important decisions to be made on and off the pitch during the off-season.
Michael Carrick will be in charge of the team until at least the summer, but the 43-year-old’s long-term future as manager at Old Trafford is yet to be decided.
He certainly made a great bet to secure a permanent position, losing just one of his first eight Premier League games in charge of the Red Devils.
However, on the pitch, it is hoped that further reinforcements will help the club move up the league standings, potentially gaining momentum as they look to compete for the title in the 2026/27 season.
Despite the club spending a lot of money to strengthen the department in the summer of 2025, one area of the pitch in particular may have room for further improvement.
Manchester United enter talks to sign new talisman
Despite signing Benjamin Sesco, Brian Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the summer, United are likely to sign another new attacker during the off-season.
The Red Devils have been linked in recent days with an interest in Athletic Club star Nico Williams, but could face competition for his signature.
Arsenal are another English team that has been mentioned with interest in the Spain international, who has scored a total of seven goals and provided an assist so far this season.
Williams is not the only player in the spotlight ahead of the summer, with Inter Milan forward Pio Esposito also currently under consideration by executives.
According to CaughtOffside, the Red Devils are already in contact with the Italian giants over a deal for the 20-year-old, who has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.
The newspaper also claims that Mikel Arteta’s side are also interested in the centre-forward, who has been touted as a free signing ahead of the off-season.
The lack of payment for his services may be due to coach Cristian Chivu’s reluctance to release the player, with the article stating that the player is not for sale.
Why Esposito could be United’s next Hoylund
Apart from recent summer additions, United have spent heavily on attacking reinforcements in the past as they look to regain their former glory.
Rasmus Hjølund is just one example of the club’s recent big spending spree, having subsequently joined the club for a reported £72 million, including add-ons.
Although such a transfer was one of the most expensive in the club’s history, it is no exaggeration to say that his time at Old Trafford fell far short of supporters’ expectations.
Manchester United’s richest contract in history
Many of their additions have not lived up to expectations.
The Denmark international scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for the Red Devils before returning to Italy on loan for the season.
The 23-year-old is expected to make a permanent move to Napoli in the summer, which could free up valuable funds for the new manager to sign new attacking talent.
Esposito is just one of the options currently being considered, but if he’s not careful he could suffer the same fate as Hoylund if he moves to Theater of Dreams.
However, the youngster has racked up a number of impressive performances in his breakout year at the San Siro and could become a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.
The Italian star, who has already scored eight goals, also has a number of impressive foundational figures that will no doubt help him in his bid to succeed at Old Trafford.
Described as “incredible” by talent scout Antonio Mango, Esposito shot 37 percent on target while shooting 1.4 of 90 on target.
Pio Esposito – Serie A Statistics (2025/26) | |
|---|---|
Statistics (every 90) | tally |
games played | 26 |
goals and assists | 7 |
Accuracy of shots on target | 37% |
shot on target | 1.4 |
Pass accuracy | 73% |
aerial won | 2.8 |
Touch inside the 18 yard box | 8.1 |
foul win | 3.4 |
The latter of the aforementioned statistics is the highest of any member of United’s squad this season, while also ranking him within the top 12% of all players in Serie A this season.
He has also created 1.3 chances and won 2.8 aerial duels in 90 games so far this season. This number could make him the perfect all-round option for the Red Devils.
Esposito’s all-round qualities are certainly impressive, especially considering his young age, and United could be able to sign yet another talented central player alongside Sesco.
The Italian also has a poacher-like style of play inside the box, with 8.1 touches per 90 in the opposition box, which puts him in the top 8% of all Italian attackers.
Inter’s reluctance to sell Esposito could make it a bit difficult to complete a deal this summer, but it is clear that the youngster would be yet another great addition.
United’s recent additions from Serie A will no doubt raise concerns, but given the Italian’s physical assets he would be a much better addition than Hojlund.
Winning the race for him over Arsenal would certainly be a further statement of commitment, and his potential signing would give the club a further boost in their quest for a return to glory.
Forget Anderson: Manchester United have already signed the ‘beast’ to replace Casemiro
He could give the Red Devils an immediate solution.
