West Ham United are currently involved in an “absolutely insane” race to sign a Champions League striker, but will face tough competition from Sunderland.
West Ham focus on striker despite Wilson signing new contract
Callum Wilson hasn’t scored for nearly two months, last hitting the net in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on January 17, but the striker still managed to secure a new contract, putting pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at the London Stadium until the summer of 2027.
Wilson is now 34 years old and has found it difficult to secure a place in the starting XI, so it may have been a strange decision to offer him a new contract, but fellow striker Tati Castellanos hasn’t fared as well, scoring just two goals in 10 Premier League appearances.
Despite his lack of action in front of goal, Nuno revealed he was happy with the impact the Argentine has made, saying earlier this month: “We are happy not only with Tati but also with the players we have brought in who have really brought energy to the team.
“Taiti is doing well so I hope he continues. I think he has adapted to the Premier League quickly and we expect a lot more from him.”
However, according to a report from Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), West Ham are in the race to sign a new striker in the summer transfer window and are wary of signing Juventus star Jonathan David.
The Serie A side have expressed their desire to sell David in the summer transfer window, and there is interest from within the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest also mentioned as candidates.
Sunderland are already in contract talks with the Canadian international, but with the Irons eyeing a move, a hijacking could occur.
‘Absolutely insane’ possibility of David signing West Ham statement
The 26-year-old made the move to Juventus in the summer after impressing for many years in Ligue 1 with Lille. Scout Antonio Mango is a particularly passionate fan.
The £185,000-a-week striker was regularly on the scoresheet throughout his time with the French team, and was a standout in Ghent’s Jupiler Pro League, but his results in Serie A were less than impressive.
Jonathan David’s offensive stats | Appearance | commitment to goals |
Ligue 1 | 178 | 104 |
jupiler pro league | 50 | 38 |
Serie A | 28 | 9 |
However, it is still early days for David in Italy, who has scored twice in the Champions League this season, but his achievements so far suggest he could declare to sign for West Ham this summer.
