Manchester United’s search for their next permanent manager has taken an interesting turn, with Roberto De Zerbi reportedly emerging as one of the leading candidates keen to take charge at Old Trafford.
According to TEAMtalk, former Brighton and Marseille manager De Zerbi is set to take over as Man United manager at the end of the season.
However, thanks in large part to Michael Carrick’s incredible performances of late, INEOS and United bosses find themselves facing a huge challenge ahead of the summer transfer window.
Carrick, who was hired as interim manager, scored an astonishing 22 points instead of a possible 27.
This incredible run of form has seen the Red Devils move into pole position behind Arsenal and Manchester City and secure a place in next season’s lucrative Champions League.
De Zerbi keen to return to Premier League
Even if the United bosses were against giving Carrick the full-time job, there would be no shortage of elite candidates.
De Zerbi is very interested in the position after leaving Marseille by mutual agreement last month.
The Italian tactician gained an excellent reputation during his time at Brighton in the Premier League.
The 46-year-old led Marseille to second place in Ligue 1 last season.
However, he was unable to repeat that form this season and left the French giants in February after suffering a 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain and being eliminated from the Champions League against Club Brugge.
Carrick remains Manchester United’s top choice
That’s not surprising considering how the Red Devils have played under Carrick.
They look like a proper team again, a team that can attack, play beautiful football and entertain the fans at Old Trafford, which Man United were famous for.
Other names in the conversation include German manager Julian Nagelsmann and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, while some media outlets have also mentioned Mauricio Pochettino.
However, these two managers will only be appointed after this summer’s World Cup.
All eyes will be on the Old Trafford hotseat this summer.
The Euro giants are confident of signing the Manchester United star, but he will have to accept one key condition
