The row over Enzo Fernandes’ future at Chelsea has taken a conciliatory turn, with the Argentine midfielder and his agent issuing a formal apology to the club, according to Sky Sports.

The controversy, in which Fernandes publicly expressed his admiration for Madrid City, shocked Stamford Bridge and led to swift disciplinary action by management staff.

Both sides are currently trying to mend fences and restore harmony in the dressing room, but this episode exposed tensions over stalled contract negotiations and the ever-present shadow of Real Madrid.

Chelsea suspend Fernandes over Madrid-related comments

The drama first caught fire during the recent international break.

In interviews with Argentine media, Fernández openly admitted that he would welcome the opportunity to live in the Spanish capital, affectionately citing the cultural and climatic similarities with Buenos Aires.

These comments were particularly worrying to Chelsea’s hierarchy as they came on the heels of the club’s heavy Champions League defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

After that defeat, the midfielder cast big doubts over his commitment to the West London project, and when asked if he would remain at the club next season, he answered anxiously: “I don’t know.”

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior responded to the media uproar with decisive authority. Declaring that he had “crossed a line” regarding the club’s strict internal culture, Rosenior chose to make a big statement by letting his star midfielder go.

Fernandez’s agent told him the real problem

Fernandes’ agent recently clarified the situation, revealing that talks over a lucrative contract extension recently broke down.

Despite the World Cup winner currently having an unprecedented contract until 2032, his camp firmly believe his current height and performance in midfield merits a significant pay rise.

In the absence of a mutual agreement, his representatives issued a thinly veiled ultimatum. They plan to return to the negotiating table after the upcoming 2026 World Cup, but will be forced to “explore other options” if suitable conditions are not met.

This attitude inevitably put Real Madrid on high alert. The Spanish giants are notoriously in the market for midfield hotshots this summer, but the £100m-valued Argentine remains one of their main targets.

For now, the flames appear to have been extinguished after receiving apologies from the player and his agent.
