Goalkeeper Matt Freeze, defender Alex Freeman, and midfielder Diego Luna have all taken full advantage, showcasing their potential on the international stage.

Yet, it was not only the newcomers who stood out. Defender Chris Richards emerged as the most reliable player for the team during the Gold Cup, putting himself in contention for a spot in the lineup as the FIFA World Cup approaches next year.

This was a different narrative just six weeks ago.

Before the Gold Cup, there were doubts over the starting center-back combination, with both positions seemingly up for grabs. Richards was predicted to be a key figure for the US in this cycle, yet his previous international performances had not mirrored his form at the club level. His showing at the 2024 Copa America fell short, and a lack of precision in his passing and inconsistency in defense marred his efforts. He also underperformed, finishing fourth in the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League.

However, after a strong second half of the season with Crystal Palace, the 25-year-old rose to new heights. His Gold Cup performances reflected his renewed confidence, as he made significant contributions to his team’s solid defense, notably minimizing set-piece threats, including during the final when they lost 2-1.

Following the final, Richards expressed his frustration, even mentioning how he threw away his runner-up medal before entering the post-match area. Nevertheless, he took time to consider the significance of the Gold Cup to him personally.

“Participating in this tournament was a challenge I set for myself. I aimed to solidify my position on the team. Each camp pushes me forward. I have to continue working and playing,” he commented.

Naturally from Hoover, Alabama, Richards has now become a pivotal name in Pochettino’s lineup, gaining respect from his teammates.

“I’m watching (Richards) and he’s really stepping up. He’s doing what we all expect from him and what he expects from himself as a center-back,” said defender Tim Ream to ESPN. “He’s still learning, and witnessing his growth over the past two years has been amazing.”

Ream noted that fatherhood has shifted his perspective as a player and motivated him positively; he feels Richards has had a similar transformation since becoming a dad to his daughter, Luna. Richards concurs.

“Being a father has changed my priorities,” Richards shared. “I have to provide for her and my girlfriend, so it has definitely brought challenges.”

Players often talk about the rigorous grind of the season. Certain tasks can lead to a series of gradual advancements toward success, though moments can also dictate the season’s outcome. For Richards, that pivotal moment arrived last October.

      <picture>

      </picture>
In the Gold Cup this summer, Chris Richards demonstrated why he is expected to be a cornerstone of the US defense. (Photo: Aric Becker/ISI Photos/ussf/getty images)

Initially, Crystal Palace struggled, winning just one league match in the first two and a half months, and a hamstring injury sidelined Richards. This affected his place in the starting XI. It was during this tough period that a conversa
tion with assistant coach Paddy McCarthy, a former Palace defender, provided Richards with clarity.

“He asked me directly, ‘What do you want from your career? Are you okay with just being a bench warmer, or do you aspire to play at a higher level?'” McCarthy believed in him and saw potential for Richards to reach greater heights.

McCarthy also gave Richards tactical insights, encouraging him to drop deeper to receive the ball, which allowed him to move more freely through the lanes.

“That conversation stung a bit,” Richards admitted. “But it was essential, both as a player and as a professional. Quill, who brought Richards from Alabama to Houston, guided his U18 team to a national championship. Among that team was Detroit Lions place kicker Jake Bates.

Quill believed in Richards’ potential even after he was initially rejected by the FC Dallas Academy. His unique athleticism and swift game comprehension set him apart.

“His aerial ability was remarkable,” Quill noted. “His game reading was top-notch, allowing him to anticipate plays without sprinting the length of the field.”

Quill has tracked Richards’ journey through FC Dallas, Bayern Munich, TSG Hoffenheim, and now Crystal Palace. He attributes Richards’ ascent to consistent health.

“When he was fit, he was in form; injuries often held him back.
