I\u00f1aki Williams aims to keep breaking barriers after making history as the first Black player to captain Athletic Club.<\/p>\n

The forward, who was born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, also represents an African nation on the international stage.<\/p>\n

His younger brother, Nico, a key player in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, has recently extended his contract with Athletic.<\/p>\n

“This means a lot to me,” Inaki, 31, stated on Tuesday when discussing his role as the first black captain of the team. “Without my parents, neither Nico nor I would be here.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are lucky to represent many people from our backgrounds, and it\u2019s important to acknowledge that here in Spain.”<\/p>\n

“Coming from humble beginnings, we highlight the stories of immigrants who come here for a better life. With the rise of far-right sentiments, it’s crucial that we continue our efforts to break down barriers.”<\/p>\n

Inaki also affirmed that his brother, Nico Williams, made the right choice by staying with Athletic.<\/p>\n

Nico, 23, who had been a long-term target for Barcelona, signed a 10-year deal with the club earlier this month.<\/p>\n

“It would have been simple for him to join a major club and chase titles,” Inaki remarked.<\/p>\n

“But he chose to remain with Athletic, build a legacy, play alongside his brother, and have our parents around for daily matches at San Mam\u00e9s. He had numerous offers; he’s a top-level player sought after by big clubs.”<\/p>\n

“Ultimately, he made the best decision rooted in passion and ambition.”<\/p>\n
