Last year, Stone was the favorite in this race, with Sean Bowen aiming to set a record using a horse that set the standard in British staying races. Strong Leader was considered one of the best, but in the final furlong, Nicky Henderson’s Impose Toy surged ahead to repeat his previous long-distance hurdles victory, securing Newbury’s win once again.

Murphy expressed mixed feelings, admitting it was tough to lose but praised his horse’s outstanding performance, possibly the best of its career. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t match the better competitor that day. Murphy noted that Strong Leader, still Britain’s top-rated stayer, showed great form under Sean’s expert ride, but victory went to a deserving rival.

Looking ahead, Strong Leader seems likely to head back to Aintree this spring, having finished first and second in the last two Liverpool Hurdle races. However, Murphy plans to give the horse one last chance to qualify for Cheltenham by entering the Cleeve Hurdle at next month’s Festival Trial Day. He indicated the horse might choose a path through the Cleeve and then Aintree rather than tackling the Stayers Hurdle in between. While proud of today’s performance, Murphy’s goal remains to win these significant races.

At Aintree, Honesty Policy shone by winning Grade 1 honors on the Grand National undercard, impressively doing so on just his second race over three miles. This appeared to boost hopes for Gordon Elliott in the Stayers Hurdle category. The horse returned to form at the right time for his trainer Cullentra House and owner JP McManus, finishing strongly in third place in a recent race. McManus’s racing manager, Frank Berry, expressed satisfaction with Honesty Policy’s performance, highlighting the horse’s endurance and potential.

Berry also mentioned plans to target the Stayers Hurdle, barring any changes from Gordon. With Elliott’s horse performing exceptionally well, this promising start to the season raises expectations for upcoming races.

Fan Take: This race highlights the fierce competition and emerging talent in stayers’ hurdle races, offering thrilling prospects for fans. Strong Leader’s resilience and Honesty Policy’s rise could shape an exciting season, keeping the sport dynamic and unpredictable.

Olly Murphy acknowledged that Strong Leader had been beaten by a superior horse after bravely stepping down in the Howden Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot.
