You might dominate multiple categories or have a commanding point lead, but failing to capitalize on weekend games can still lead to a loss.

This weekend, twelve teams will only play once: Nets, Hornets, Cavaliers, Mavericks, Nuggets, Warriors, Rockets, Lakers, Timberwolves, Knicks, Thunder, and Spurs. To maximize your fantasy points, it’s best to avoid relying on players from these teams.

While this scenario often happens in standard points and category leagues, it’s not always the case. Leagues with game caps or best ball formats, like Yahoo’s high score leagues, emphasize not just volume but also strategic opportunities, such as having multiple chances during a big night.

Must-Start Player: Kelel Ware, Miami Heat
Ware’s season has been up and down, but when he starts and plays significant minutes, he shines. This weekend presents an excellent opportunity with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against the Hawks and Pacers—two of the league’s poorest rebounding teams. Bam Adebayo is questionable Friday, which could mean more minutes for Ware. Without Adebayo this season, Ware averaged 12.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks. Despite a rough last game, in three starts last season, he averaged 24.7 points, 15 rebounds, and four three-pointers.

Guards

Collin Gillespie, Phoenix Suns: With Grayson Allen absent Friday and possibly Saturday, Gillespie continues to start. Over 10 starts this season, he’s averaged 16.5 points, 4 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.7 steals, and 3.1 three-pointers.

Ryan Rollins, Milwaukee Bucks: Rollins gained extra playing time when Gary Trent Jr. left early due to injury. Though Trent Jr. is out, Rollins’ strong performance ensures he’s valuable. The Bulls and Grizzlies have struggled defending the three-point line recently.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Atlanta Hawks: With Trae Young unlikely to play both weekend games as he recovers from a knee injury, NAW will likely start against the Knicks Saturday. Miami’s fast pace should support his productive night. His starting role makes him an especially attractive pick.

Forwards

Jaime Jaquez Jr., Miami Heat: With Tyler Herro still sidelined and Adebayo potentially out on Friday, Jaquez’s minutes and scoring chances have grown. The Hawks and Pacers both have been defensively weak recently, making Jaquez a key scorer for Miami this weekend.

Santi Aldama, Memphis Grizzlies: Aldama has been performing well, and this weekend’s opponents, Milwaukee and Washington, have struggled defending the three-point line. Aldama’s recent scoring surges make him a prime candidate to exploit those defensive lapses.

Anthony Black, Orlando Magic: Black is starting in place of Franz Wagner and has increased his production due to Jalen Suggs’ absence. Over the last four games without Suggs, Black averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists. He should take full advantage of his opportunities versus the Hornets and Nuggets.

Centers

Sandro Mamukelashvili, Toronto Raptors: With Jakob Poeltl still out, Mamukelashvili must step up. He averages 16.2 points, 6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 3.4 three-pointers in his five starts. The Raptors face the Wizards and Warriors this weekend; Washington’s struggles in paint defense make Mamukelashvili an essential asset until Poeltl returns.

Niemias Queta, Boston Celtics: Queta has been solid all season and faces two favorable matchups this weekend, including the Pacers—one of the league’s poorest rebounding teams—and a trailblazers team with weak rebounding recently.

Derrick Queen, New Orleans Pelicans: Queen frequently appears on fantasy radar, with the Pelicans playing the Suns twice this weekend. Phoenix ranks third-worst in rebounding percentage over the last ten games. Queen’s strong recent form suggests a big weekend ahead, especially given Mark Williams’ inconsistent playtime.

Fan Take: This weekend’s fantasy basketball landscape highlights how strategic player selection based on injuries and opponent weaknesses can drastically impact outcomes. For basketball fans, it underscores the growing importance of deep analytical insights and savvy roster management in both fantasy and actual game strategy, making the sport even more exciting and dynamic.

In head-to-head fantasy basketball leagues, the weekend is crucial.
