In exchange, the Nationals received five prospects, notably shortstop Gavin Fien, who was the 12th overall pick in last summer’s draft.

Whenever a significant offseason trade occurs in Major League Baseball, I take the opportunity to analyze the players involved and assign a rating to each team based on the perceived quality of the deal. While these letter grades serve as a quick summary, they are the least critical aspect of the evaluation.

Before diving into the details, it’s important to revisit the overall philosophy behind trading in baseball.

Texas Rangers Grade: B

This move is somewhat unexpected. After finishing last season at a .500 record and remaining mostly quiet during the offseason—non-tendering outfielder Adris Garcia and catcher Jonah Heim, trading Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo, and signing catcher Danny Jansen along with relievers Alexis Diaz, Jakob Junis, and Tyler Alexander—the Rangers didn’t seem poised to aggressively pursue Gore. Yet, they have secured him, which is a big win.

Chris Young envisions one of the American League’s most formidable starting rotations with Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, and Gore. Last year, Texas ranked 22nd in runs scored and 25th in weighted runs created plus (wRC+), so improved production from designated hitter Joc Pederson and first baseman Jake Berger is vital. There’s also a promising possibility that top prospect infielder Sebastian Walcott, considered one of the sport’s most talented, might debut this year, further bolstering the team.

Remaining concerns include the depth of the rotation beyond the top three and the bullpen’s effectiveness. However, with the three-wild-card format, a team with a potential for 80 or more wins remains a legitimate postseason contender. While this trade might weaken an already fragile farm system, it should enhance the Rangers’ competitiveness for the next couple of seasons.

Gore, having turned 27 in February, has experienced a rocky professional path. Drafted third overall in 2017, he once drew superficial comparisons to Clayton Kershaw due to their shared pitching style. Gore struggled with control issues known as “the yips” but has since regained form, starting 105 MLB games with a 4.19 ERA and a 2.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He made his first All-Star appearance last summer but struggled in the latter half with a 6.75 ERA and a high walk rate.

Looking past the surface stats explains why the Rangers value him. Gore’s arsenal includes five pitches: a mid-90s fastball, curveball, slider, cutter, and changeup. His fastball is exceptional for a lefty of his stature, featuring notable vertical movement. Each of his breaking pitches generates more than a 35% whiff rate.

His major issue has been command, walking nearly four batters per nine innings, and avoiding throwing certain pitches inside the strike zone. He also heavily leans on his heater against right-handed hitters more than most lefties. The Rangers hope to refine his pitch mix and approach to unlock his full potential.

If successful, this not only benefits Texas on the mound but also preserves the option to trade Gore later if necessary, whether next summer or beyond.

Washington Nationals Grade: B

This is the Nationals’ first significant transaction under new management and signals a strategic direction that may involve further roster changes. Rather than sacrificing quality for quantity, Washington acquired three intriguing prospects from the Rangers—Gavin Fien, Rosario, and Fitzgerald—along with two hitters with upside, Ortiz and Cabrera.

Gavin Fien, 18, was a highly regarded prep hitter last year, taken 12th overall. He played 10 games in the Carolina League, batting .220/.267/.341 with four extra-base hits. While the sample size and stats are limited, scouts believe his frame and plate discipline project him as an above-average hitter long term. There’s anticipation he’ll move from shortstop to third base, adding some pressure on his offensive output to meet expectations.

Rosario, 24, was a fifth-round pick who impressed in 2024 with a 2.24 ERA and a 9.92 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 88 innings in A-ball. However, he hasn’t pitched since suffering an elbow injury last spring and delayed undergoing Tommy John surgery until earlier this year. He’s not expected back until spring 2027; if he returns healthy, he could become a reliable starting pitcher.

Fitzgerald, 20, is a switch-hitting infielder selected in the fifth round of the 2024 draft. In 41 games last year, he hit .302/.428/.482, showcasing six home runs, eight stolen bases, and excellent plate discipline. Known for his contact skills and ability to pull and elevate the ball beyond raw power, Fitzgerald may evolve into a solid everyday player. Though not flashy, his instincts—partly credited to his father’s coaching background—could pave the way for a starting role.

Ortiz, almost 24, is likely to be the quickest Nationals prospect to reach the majors. In Double-A and Triple-A last year, he slashed .257/.356/.479 with 25 home runs, demonstrating impressive bat speed on par with established players like Teoscar Hernandez and Corey Seager. Yet, his struggles working counts, difficulty against left-handers, and limited defensive range (primarily a first baseman or designated hitter) mean that sustained hitting will be key for his success.

Cabrera, 20, batted .256/.364/.366 with eight home runs and 43 stolen bases in the Carolina League. An exceptional runner and outfielder, his offensive development will determine his trajectory. While he improved his contact rate without sacrificing patience, inconsistent power and poor results against lefties suggest he might be best suited for a platoon role.

The biggest question facing Washington now is what’s next. If they decide to continue dismantling, shortstop CJ Abrams might be dealt, which would raise questions about outfielder James Wood’s future, echoing previous challenging rebuild moments like those involving Juan Soto. Fans can only hope this approach yields better results this time around.

Fan Take:
This trade showcases contrasting strategies—Texas betting on immediate impact pitching to push for contention, while Washington focuses on building for the future through promising young talent. Baseball fans should watch this deal closely as it embodies the tension between competing now and planning ahead, defining how organizations shape their success in the modern era.

The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals finalized a six-player trade on Thursday, with left-handed starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore moving from Washington to Arlington.
