I called this the proof of a short game. It was a nice bounce back from the disappointment of a sloppy second round at TPC Scottsdale&#8217;s Stadium Course. This course has often been a springboard for his early start to the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought I&#8217;d forget about that and use this as a pseudo-Phoenix to dial it in,&#8221; he says. \u201cLast Friday, I had a really bad day and woke up on the flip side of a great day.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"consent\"\/>\n<p>The highlight of Spieth&#8217;s opening round was another hole out for eagle. Only this was the 18th par 4.<sup>th<\/sup> He hit a gap wedge from 116 yards for deuce.<\/p>\n<p>advertisement<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I took it off a little bit to control the spin and it landed a little bit right and had some draw spin,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That was a real bonus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spieth always cycles through this week on his calendar. He has been an AT&#038;T ambassador since 2014, wears the logo on his golf bag, received his first tour exemption as a professional here in 2013, and won the tournament at age 23 in 2017, making him the youngest champion. Overall, he has six top-10 finishes in this tournament, the second-most of any player competing this week behind Jason Day with nine, and tied for second-most in any tournament of his tour career.<\/p>\n<p>Spieth enters this week with 151 birdies at the AT&#038;T Pebble Beach Pro-Am since 2017, the most of any player in that span.
