He also missed last year&#8217;s U.S. Open.<\/p>\n<p>Nishikori, who made his professional debut in 2007, became the first Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam men&#8217;s singles final at the 2014 US Open, but lost in straight sets to Marin Cilic of Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>Nishikori, who won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by defeating Rafael Nadal in three sets, said in early April about his health that he was &#8220;barely holding on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nishikori said in &#8220;X&#8221;, &#8220;Looking back on everything I&#8217;ve done so far, I can proudly say that I did my best.
