Just a few months ago, Ange Postecoglou lamented on Overlap that the Spurs are unable to pay premium wages and are instead opting to raise the floor rather than raise the cap.

The Londoners are unlikely to challenge the financial might of Manchester United or Manchester City, nor will they have the same appeal, but they need to be more ambitious and, importantly, more street smart.

Signing out a contracted player is not overly ambitious, but it represents an effort to be astute in the transfer market. Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi will sign for Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively on free transfers after their contracts expire this summer, according to the latest reports.

What about bigger deals? Well, Manchester City’s Savinho is one of them.

Spurs are considering signing a new winger

Spurs were very interested in signing Sabinho from the Etihad last summer. The Brazilian was subject to several bids from the Lilywhites, but ultimately remained at City and penned a new contract.

Now, a year later, the recruiting team has resumed negotiations to sign the player, and he is said to be open to a move. Tottenham may be able to lower their asking price a bit after a season in which he struggled to earn regular minutes.

RB Leipzig’s Yann Diomande is also attracting attention. The 19-year-old seems the least likely of their targets, as he is currently one of the hottest players in European football.

Perhaps signing Marcus Rashford could be wise? The England international is set to leave Man United permanently this summer and there are a number of suitors, particularly Barcelona, who would like to have him after an impressive loan spell in 2025-26.

They could sign him for £26 million but are negotiating for less. This is pretty ridiculous for a player of his quality and could allow other players to leapfrog the Spanish side.

According to the Daily Mail, Rashford is dreaming of a return to Barça, while Aston Villa, Arsenal and Spurs are said to have held talks to sign the winger this summer.

Why Rashford is a better deal than Sabinho

Signing Sabinho isn’t necessarily a bad deal, but it’s something of a gamble, and given that Spurs currently sit 17th in the season, they can’t afford to take any more risks in the transfer market.

Manchester City’s winger is certainly a threat. He also recorded 13 assists in the 2024/25 season. However, in the 2025/26 season, he only started seven league games, scoring once and assisting twice. This isn’t great, but rather impressively, he currently ranks in the best 1% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues in progressive carries per 90, posting an impressive 9.81.

A carry is considered progressive if the ball moves toward the opponent’s goal at least 10 yards from the starting point or is carried into the penalty area.

The 22-year-old Brazilian has a lot of potential and could very well realize it at Spurs. But in Rashford, he will be signing a plug-and-play winger who, in the words of international colleague Anthony Gordon, is “one of the best players in the world” on a ready-made option.

After being shunned by Ruben Amorim in the 2024/25 season and being left out by Gareth Southgate in particular for the 2024 European Championship, the Englishman’s stock has fallen significantly.

Well, he is now back in form again and is recognized as one of the best wingers in the game after helping Barcelona win La Liga.

Rashford’s last five seasons

season

game

the goal

assist

2021/22

32

5

2

2022/23

56

30

9

2023/24

43

8

5

2024/25

41

11

8

2025/26

49

14

14

His stay at Camp Nou reminded everyone of how good he was in his prime at Manchester United.
