Sinner entered the day on a 30-game winning streak, the longest in men’s tennis since 2000.

Through two sets, it looked like this winning streak would continue. Then disaster struck.

advertisement

Sinner suffered a spasm-like injury during the third set. World number one Sinner never recovered after taking a controversial time-out and was upset by Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundro, who entered the tournament ranked 56th in the men’s rankings.

Even considering Sinner’s injury, Cerundro’s upset was one of the biggest in the history of the sport. But where does it rank among the greatest upsets in all of sports? Let’s take a look at some of the contenders for that title.

USA defeats Russia at 1980 Winter Olympics

In what is widely considered the greatest upset in sports history, Team USA somehow found a way to defeat Russia’s dominant hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Russian team had won eight of the past nine gold medals in this competition, and were just days away from defeating the American team 10-3 in an exhibition game.

advertisement

However, Team USA found a way to go even with Russia in the medal round. Goaltender Jim Craig bounced back after allowing two early goals and allowed just one more goal despite a barrage of Russian players. As time expired, Mike Eruzione gave Team USA a narrow 4-3 lead. As time expired, broadcaster Al Michaels declared, “Do you believe in miracles?”, creating perhaps the most iconic call in sports broadcast history.

Jets defeat Colts in Super Bowl III

New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath didn’t care about the odds. Despite the team losing by double digits to the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, Namath guaranteed a victory. He delivered on that promise, leading to a 16-7 victory over the highly anticipated Colts. This game is notable not only for the upset, but also for Namath’s guarantee. Other players have tried to repeat the act over the years, some with success, but Namath’s declaration has never truly surpassed it.

Giants defeat undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl 42

The New England Patriots entered Super Bowl XLII looking to make history. After a perfect regular season, the Patriots were looking to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to win the Super Bowl without losing a game.

advertisement

But Eli Manning had a clutch throw and a little help from the football gods and had other plans. After a strong performance by the Giants’ defense, Manning entered the game with just over two minutes left in the game and led the game-winning performance with a number of “helmet catches” and late down conversions. The Giants won 17-14, and Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Randy Moss went home disappointed.

The University of Michigan opened the 2007 season as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation. Appalachian State had missed out on the FCS Championship two years in a row, and the general belief was that the team couldn’t compete with DI’s elite.

But Appalachian State jumped out to an early lead, and soon Michigan was on alert for an upset. But the Wolverines fought back and took a one-point lead with just over four minutes left. It felt as if order had been restored and the University of Michigan was asserting its rightful place as one of the sports world’s elite.

advertisement

But Appalachian State took the lead with a field goal with 30 seconds left. Michigan had one last chance, driving down the field for a potential game-clinching field goal. This was thwarted, and Appalachian State University delivered a blowout victory over a college football powerhouse.

Fairleigh Dickinson defeats No. 1 seed Purdue in NCAA Tournament

The No. 1 seed entered the 2023 NCAA Tournament with a 150-1 record in the first round. Given those odds, top-seeded Purdue had to be satisfied with a matchup against No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson.

However, despite trailing by 23.5 points, the Knights pulled off the upset, defeating Purdue 63-58. Despite being named Big Ten and National Player of the Year, Purdue big man Zach Eady was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament after just one game.

advertisement

However, Fairleigh Dickinson’s time in the spotlight did not last long, as the team lost its next game to No. 9 Florida Atlantic.

Upset defeats Man O’ War at Sanford Memorial Tournament

Man O’ War is widely considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time. Man O’ War had a record of 20 wins and 1 loss during his career. His only loss was against a horse with a very convenient name.

Man O’ War was upset by an upset at the Sanford Memorial in 1919. Man O’ War got off to a slow start and was unable to fully recover, losing a close battle.

While some may attribute Upset’s victory over Man O’ War to the sports term “upset,” that’s not really the case. The term “upset” existed even before Upset’s big win.

advertisement

Biggest upset in tennis history

When it comes to tennis alone, Sinner’s second-round upset has some similarities to the sport’s biggest upset in recent memory.

Candidates for the biggest upset in tennis history include:

• Denis Istomin defeats Novak Djokovic in 2017 Australian Open second round
• Steve Darcis defeats Rafael Nadal in 2013 Wimbledon first round
• Virginie Razzano defeats Serena Williams in the first round of the 2012 French Open.
• Robin Soderling defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the 2009 French Open.
• Sergiy Stakhovsky defeated Roger Federer in the second round at Wimbledon 2013
• Lucas Rosol defeats Rafael Nadal in 2012 Wimbledon second round

advertisement

Where does Jannik Sinner’s loss to Juan Manuel Cerundro rank?

Sinner’s upset on Thursday is noteworthy, but it probably doesn’t rank higher than some of the tennis-specific upsets listed above. As such, Sinner’s upset likely doesn’t rank among the greatest in sports history…but in all fairness, it’s a pretty impressive list.

In terms of tennis, it’s probably on par with the above match, but not greater. In all of the above examples, the players who were upset (Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Williams) were already well into their careers and had a long track record of success in the sport. All four players had won at least six Grand Slam tournaments before their losses. The numbers were double digits for Djokokic, Federer and Williams.

Sinner is well on its way to those heights. Since 2024, he has won four Grand Slam tournaments. He’s clearly established himself as one of the best, if not the best, male players at the moment.

advertisement

As such, Sinner’s upset is noteworthy and will definitely be added to the list of top upsets in recent tennis history. However, from a ranking perspective, it may be placed just below the rankings above, as it came out quite early in Sinner’s rise to stardom.

Jannik Sinner entered Thursday’s second round at the 2026 French Open looking invincible.
