There were so many crosswinds, so I kept trying to hit draws because I thought it would help if I could hold in the headwind in the left-to-right wind,” Kuchar explained. “Sometimes golf becomes a little easier when you can predict the outcome.”

He shot a 71 in the second round and a 66 on Saturday, including a double bogey on the 16th where he hit a fairway bunker, was forced to punch out, and three-putted after his approach. He entered the final round with a three-stroke lead over Spieth and a great chance to win his first major. His wife, Sibi, didn’t want to miss out on being there, so she and her sons, Cameron and Carson, hopped on an overnight flight from Colorado.

Spieth had already splashed the ball all over the course, sinking three three-putts on the front nine and leaking oil, but his tee shot on the par-4 13th went 75 yards to the right of the fairway. Kuchar’s caddy, John Wood, wasn’t even sure he could find the ball in the deep grass, but they did, so Spieth’s only option was to take it unplayable. He then sensibly asked whether a practice range would be considered within limits.
