WIMBLEDON, England — Forty-five days after his shocking second-round loss at Roland Garros, and 163 days after his bid for a third consecutive Australian Open title was derailed in the semifinals, Jannik Sinner found himself back at the top of the tennis world Sunday.<\/p>\n

Sinner became Wimbledon champion for the second consecutive year with a 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 victory over world No. 2 Alexander Zverev, who ultimately won the title in Paris. After clinching the trophy with a forehand winner after a tense three hours and 46 minutes, he collapsed to the ground and covered his eyes with his hands, looking completely relieved.<\/p>\n

It had been a year since he last lifted a big trophy, and it was as if all the emotions had caught up with him in an instant. But then he sat back down, straightened up quickly, and hugged Zverev.<\/p>\n

Suddenly everything seemed familiar again and he was back in the place and position where he belonged. Sinner, 24, became his fifth Grand Slam champion.<\/p>\n

He thanked the crowd during the trophy presentation ceremony and explained that players never know how many times they get the chance to play on Center Court on Championship Sunday, and how special it is. “I never take things for granted,” he added.<\/p>\n

But after his stunning come-from-behind victory, he silenced everyone who had begun to doubt his greatness by making it clear that he should remain a favorite almost everywhere he plays, a player who could win countless finals and trophies.<\/p>\n

And after an eventful year, this year meant everything.<\/p>\n

Darren Cahill, one of Sinner’s coaches, said after the game, “We arrived here 12 days early and didn’t play in the lead-in tournament, so we knew the first few games were going to be very difficult for him.” “He just puts his head down and goes to work. He’s had a great attitude throughout this tournament.<\/p>\n

“He’s going to have a long and illustrious career. He’s going to put himself in a position to win more in these major tournaments. I don’t think this game was more important than the others he’s played, but it felt very special, that’s for sure.”<\/p>\n\n
