Monroe &#8211; Louisiana Monroe&#8217;s women&#8217;s tennis program was dissolved due to financial constraints of the university&#8217;s athletics department.<\/p>\n<p>Athletic Director John Hartwell announced this week that the decision was attributed to &#8220;increased operational and infrastructure costs,&#8221; and ULM track and field will help maintain a minimum of 16 Division I sports for the NCAA, whilst helping to &#8220;balance budgets&#8221; and &#8220;balance budgets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canceling a sport is by no means an easy decision and it&#8217;s not something we should underestimate,&#8221; Hartwell said. &#8220;I know this can be difficult for a coach who has put a lot of effort into student-athletes and tennis programs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hartwell said ULM would honor scholarships for those who wish to pursue a degree without transferring. He said his administration will also help tennis players who want to continue competing in pursuit of opportunities in other schools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We plan to prioritize student-athlete transitions as smoothly as possible,&#8221; Hartwell said.<\/p>\n<p>Scholarship funds dedicated to women as a graduation or transfer of a female tennis athlete will be redirected to other women&#8217;s sports teams at ULM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La.
