  • Newcastle United are open to selling Fabian Schaal
  • Bundesliga club looking for defender

Fabian Schaal’s long and successful spell at Newcastle United could be entering its final chapter, with a new report from Sky Germany claiming the Swiss international is attracting concrete interest from several Bundesliga sides ahead of the January transfer window.

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season and Newcastle may be prepared to allow a mid-season sale to avoid losing him for nothing in June.

Schar, 33, has been a key figure in Eddie Howe’s defensive set-up as Newcastle rebuild towards European contention, offering experience, composure on the ball and reliable presence.

The Swiss centre-back made over 200 appearances for the club, becoming one of the team’s most trusted members and a quiet leader in the dressing room.

However, despite his professionalism and consistent performances, Newcastle’s long-term plans appear to be changing.

Sources say it is unlikely that Schar will be offered a contract extension as the club looks to revamp its defensive core and reduce the overall age group of the squad.

The Magpies are already looking for a young replacement and have been linked with centre-backs from across the Premier League and Europe.

Bundesliga clubs, particularly those looking for an experienced defender who can play immediately, have emerged as the main candidates for his signature.

Schar previously performed well in Germany with Hoffenheim and his style of play remains well-suited for the Bundesliga.

Sky Germany reported that several clubs had inquired about his availability in January, seeing an opportunity to sign the experienced international defender at a discount.

For Schar himself, the prospect of returning to Germany could be attractive, especially if it guarantees him regular football in the final years of his career.

He remains part of the Swiss national team and is keen to maintain his good form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
