Madrid and Vini’s Talks: A Lengthy Road Ahead Toward 2026

Negotiations for a new contract with Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid are currently at a standstill, as sources have informed ESPN that talks will not continue until after the 2026 World Cup. The forward’s existing deal at the Bernabéu runs until June 2027, which means he will enter the final year of his contract without a clear future.

Reports indicate that Vinicius’ relationship with manager Xabi Alonso has soured recently due to being excluded from the starting lineup on four occasions and being substituted during a match in October. There are hopes that the situation regarding his contract renewal might improve in the future, but there has been little progress so far.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the club and Vinicius’ agent were nearing an agreement for a salary of €20 million (roughly ¥2.3 billion) per year plus an additional €10 million (around ¥11.6 million) in bonuses. However, Vinicius’ camp contended that the club’s final offer fell short of earlier discussions and lacked promised bonuses. Club officials, on the other hand, asserted that a verbal agreement existed but was not honored, leading them to feel that Vinicius’ representatives did not uphold their end of the bargain.

Currently, Vinicius earns a net annual salary of about €17 million (around $19.7 million) under his existing contract. His representatives believe that accepting a minor pay increase in exchange for extending the contract until 2030 is unreasonable. Despite this, Real Madrid remains open to retaining Vinicius, who has secured two Champions League titles and three La Liga championships since joining in 2018, making him one of the top players globally.

Nevertheless, another source revealed that club executives are dissatisfied with the negotiation approach taken by Vinicius’ camp. The club initiated discussions with him earlier than usual in February 2025 when he was still over two years away from his contract expiration, largely due to interest from the Saudi Professional League.

Both club and player sources have noted that the signing bonus awarded to Kylian Mbappé has complicated Vinicius’ negotiations, as he seeks parity with his fellow teammates. Although Vinicius and Mbappé maintain a solid friendship, there is increased concern regarding Vinicius’ declining rapport with Alonso. After being substituted in the recent Clasico, Vinicius publicly apologized on social media but did not mention his coach.

As a key player for Brazil’s national team under former Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, Vinicius is gearing up for the upcoming World Cup next summer.

Fan Take: This situation is crucial for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing tensions and complexities of player contracts in top clubs. Vinicius’ future could significantly impact Real Madrid’s performance and shape the broader landscape of player transfers in the sport.
