One name that has been making waves in the managerial world is Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, who enjoyed a successful spell with Como in Serie A.
His team currently sit fifth in the league and could qualify for next season’s Champions League in a big surprise, showing the extent of Fabregas’ influence on the Italian club.
Given his legendary status at both Arsenal and Chelsea, it makes perfect sense that English clubs are taking note of his rapidly rising coaching stock.
But if Premier League owners think they can easily lure the Spaniard away from his current project, they will be sorely disappointed.
Fabregas is ready for a Premier League chance
Fabregas recently made it clear that while he intends to make it in England one day, he has no intention of packing up and abandoning ship in a hurry.
After first taking Como out of the depths of Serie B, he completely transformed them into a true powerhouse in the top flight.
Much of that success is due to their watertight defense. Fabregas has organized his team superbly, conceding 28 goals, the lowest in the league so far this season, and currently has the best defensive record in Serie A.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Fabregas reiterated his deep love for English football, declaring it to be the “best league in the world”.
But he also revealed the great advice he received from Jose Mourinho during their time together at Stamford Bridge.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world” Fabregas told the Daily Telegraph, as reported by Sky Sports.
“I’ve always been very clear about that. I felt it as a player, as a coach and as a fan.
“But (Jose) Mourinho said one day when he was at Chelsea: ‘I still have 30 years to work.’ So I could be here (in Como) for 10 years and still be in the Premier League in 12, 15 years.
“Football is very unpredictable and can change in an instant. One day it’s great and the next day it’s terrible. So let’s enjoy the moment. I like to enjoy the moment. It’s beautiful that we live here. Let’s see what the future holds.”
The Spaniards were greatly impressed at Como.
Chelsea are currently without a manager and are reportedly keeping the former midfield maestro under close scrutiny.
However, Fabregas recently revealed that he makes all football decisions at Como. He works smoothly with his sporting director on a day-to-day basis and feels incredibly lucky to have a club president who fully trusts him to run the show.
Such absolute structural freedom is something he will probably struggle to find under Chelsea’s current ownership model.
After all, Fabregas knows exactly how cruel this industry can be. As he wisely pointed out, football can change in an instant. One day it’s being hailed as the absolute best and the next day it’s the worst.
The Premier League will no doubt be waiting for him whenever he is ready, but for now he is determined to make Como a success.
