Where would Liverpool be this season without Dominik Szoboszlai?

The Hungarian midfielder is the frontrunner for Liverpool’s Player of the Year award, and while there is little competition for such an honour, he has been exceptional throughout the season and easily played his best season in a red shirt.

It’s interesting to look back at last summer’s transfer window and consider the reaction to Liverpool’s £115m signing of Florian Wirths from Bayer Leverkusen, but many see it as the beginning of the end for Szoboszlai, who will surely be forced into the sidelines.

But Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s shining light this season and a savior for Arne Slott. He has turned out to be a sensational signing for this Liverpool side, with the Reds currently seeking their best signing since acquiring him from RB Leipzig for £60m.

Liverpool in talks to sign new winger

Slott guided Liverpool to their 20th defeat of the season at Villa Park on Friday night, but FSG remain confident in their Dutch head coach and will be preparing for the 2026-27 season with him in the dugout.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will stick to their guns or make a twist, but there is no doubt that the Reds need an elite right-forward with Mohamed Salah stepping down after next week’s match against Brentford at Anfield.

Now, according to The i Paper, Liverpool are interested in signing RB Leipzig winger Yann Diomande this summer, with FSG already committed to spending around £75m on the Ivory Coast international.

Salah needs a replacement, so they are certainly keen to sign the 19-year-old, who is quickly emerging as one of the most exciting young wingers in the world.

However, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested, and sporting director Richard Hughes will want to conclude the matter before the World Cup starts across the pond.

Why Diomande could be Liverpool’s best player since Szoboszlai

Diomande’s speed and ability are thought to be perfect for this struggling Liverpool side. He would not only provide a strong replacement for Salah in the slot, but also support struggling striker Alexander Isak to find the world-class form that has cost him a £125m transfer fee.

He may be young and inexperienced, but Diomande has the right skill set to replace Salah and put Liverpool back in the spotlight, becoming a mainstay in Slot’s team in the future and perhaps rivaling Szoboszlai as the club’s best.

Liverpool officials may be hesitant to sign a big-money contract to a young player who has put up impressive but modest numbers in front of goal. But his shooting is accurate and his progressive metrics speak to superstar potential, with journalist Bence Bosak even calling the teenager a “generational talent.”

Whether Diomande will be active in earnest is another matter. It is certainly not easy to replace a player like Salah. However, FSG’s desire to return to and remain at the forefront of European football may depend on young players who are still developing into elite superstars, and Diomande fits the bill in that regard.

Defensively switched on and positionally dynamic, he has a certain Szoboszlai vibe to him, despite the vast differences between the pair in terms of positional value.

Is it a risk to sign this up-and-coming wide forward? Perhaps so, but Liverpool have gambled in the past, spending big on young Szoboszlei, who arrived at Anfield from Leipzig.
