At the start of Monday’s match, Madison Keys was on track to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. Not only is she the top seed, she also has a perfect 3-0 record against her opponent, Russia’s Diana Schneider.

After Schneider took the fourth game, fans feared it would be a repeat of the first set. This time, however, Keys quickly recovered and took the fifth game to regain the lead in the set. After trading the next two games, the Keys still held a slim lead. Keys won the seventh game thanks to his ace and gained momentum in the second half of the set. That turned out to be true. Schneider bounced back early in the final set. A combination of Keys’ strong play and unforced errors gave Schneider a 3-0 start to the set. Keyes was in position to win Game 4, but was unable to maintain the lead and fell once again.
Another quick win from Schneider puts Keys one game away from elimination. In the final set, they were unable to win a single game and were unable to regain momentum.

Of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the French Open proved to be the most difficult for Keys. Entering Monday, she had a 68 percent winning percentage at Roland Garros. After reaching the semifinals of this event in 2018, Keys has not been able to return to a round since. She reached the quarterfinals twice during this period, including last year, but was eliminated early at Roland Garros.
Keyes advanced to the fourth round, but was again eliminated from the event earlier than expected.
For Schneider, the win earned him a spot in the Glam Slam quarterfinals for the first time in his career. Schneider, 22, showed plenty of potential early in his career, but until Monday he had never advanced beyond the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament.
