Manchester United’s summer plans have not really changed. The club wants to rebuild its midfield properly, not just repair it.

According to X sources, United still intend to bring in three midfielders, with Atalanta’s Ederson expected to be their first signing when he joins permanently in early July.

It appears that the deal is already close to completion. Sky Sports report that United have agreed a package worth £34 million plus £3.8 million in add-ons for the Brazilian, giving him a four-year contract with an option for a one-year extension.

Ederson is just the beginning. United’s midfield shortlist is thought to include Matheus Fernandes, Aurélien Choameny, Alex Scott, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleva and Elliott Anderson.

Manchester United are targeting more midfielders

This shows that United are not looking for a specific type of midfielder. They are looking for energy, control, ball running, defensive safety, and long-term benefits.

Fernandez’s link is particularly interesting. West Ham are reportedly valuing him at around £80m, with Real Madrid and PSG also said to be interested.

Meanwhile, the Guardian reports that Ederson is seen as part of United’s reinforcement plans for a return to the Champions League, and that Jason Wilcox is a big fan of the Brazilian.

From Michael Carrick’s point of view, this restructuring is very important. United have had too many seasons in which their midfield has looked open, rushed or physically overwhelmed.

Ederson should contribute in terms of intensity and winning possession, but he cannot solve everything on his own.

That’s why it makes sense to add two more midfielders. One could be a deeper controller, the other could be a more creative or powerful No.8.

Carrick wants more balance in midfield

Bruno Fernandes and Koby Mainu could benefit greatly if United get the balance right.

United are finally starting to think properly. Signing three midfielders may sound extreme, but the team needs it.

With Casemiro’s departure and lack of consistent control, midfield has become the biggest problem.

The danger is spending too much without a clear plan. United need to avoid collecting names and instead build a unit that actually fits Carrick’s football.
