The 18-year-old is a highly regarded talent and is the son of former Arsenal defender Matthew Upson, so his decision to reject a new contract with Spurs and move to north London rivals seems perhaps appropriate.

A recent Daily Mail report had linked Upson with Arsenal and several other top clubs, but this morning Fabrizio Romano posted a ‘go’ to the deal, confirming that the deal is more or less done…

“Elijah Upson joins Arsenal, here we go! Today the 18-year-old centre-back has signed a contract to join the Gunners project. Upson has joined after turning down a new contract with Spurs.” #AFC Everything will be announced in the long run,” Romano posted on X’s official account (formerly Twitter).

Who is the new player Arsenal signed in Elijah Upson?

Upson may not yet be a big name, but he comes from a footballing family and seems to have made quite a name for himself during his time at Tottenham’s academy.

The Mail reports that Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also interested in the teenager, while Spurs are also said to be eyeing a move for him.

Arsenal fans will now be hoping he goes on to have a successful career at the Emirates Stadium and perhaps even be better than his father.

It’s worth noting that Matthew Upson started his senior career at Arsenal after joining as a youngster from Luton Town. He made 57 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League title in the 2001-02 season.

However, he didn’t quite shine in Arsene Wenger’s side and went out on loan a few times before going on to have a solid career in the Premier League with clubs such as Birmingham City, West Ham United and Stoke City.
