Arsenal are reportedly considering a surprise move for free agent defender John Stones amid growing concerns over William Saliba’s fitness ahead of the new season.

According to a report in the Irish Sun, the Gunners are considering signing the experienced England international as a short-term solution should Saliba face a long-term absence.

Arsenal to monitor John Stones after William Saliba failure

The report claims that Arsenal have identified Stones as a low-cost addition following Saliba’s injury during the World Cup in France.

The 25-year-old centre-back aggravated a suspected lower back injury during France’s semi-final loss to Spain and was sent off at half-time.

Arsenal are still awaiting a full medical assessment, but reports suggest Saliba has sustained a serious back injury that will require surgery and there are fears he could be out for several months.

If those fears are confirmed, Mikel Arteta’s side could be forced to enter the transfer market to strengthen their defensive options before the Premier League season begins.

Mikel Arteta knows John Stones well

Familiar with Arteta’s tactical approach, Stones would be an attractive option.

The Arsenal manager worked with the England defender for more than three years during his time as Josep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, when Stones became one of the Premier League’s most skilled ball-playing centre-backs.

The 32-year-old is currently available on a free transfer after his contract with Manchester City expires at the end of June, making him an attractive option for clubs looking for experienced defensive cover without paying a transfer fee.

Stones is thought to be gauging interest from clubs in England and abroad, but Arsenal could be an attractive destination if he formally shows interest, given the chance to reunite with Arteta and compete for major honours.

But for now, Arsenal’s pursuit remains at an exploratory stage, with any next move likely to depend on the results of Saliba’s medical assessment.

Tottenham also forges a relationship with the Stones

Stones also have the attention of Roberto De Zerbi, who has wasted no time in strengthening his team after a season that saw them almost relegated.

Spurs have already strengthened their defense with the addition of veterans Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka, as well as signing Marcos Senesi on a free transfer from Bournemouth.

Stones is another player De Zerbi wants to add experience and leadership at the back.
