Sorrengail (my nap) is rated 5 pounds higher than her closest competitor Miss Miniver but receives 2 pounds from that filly. She also carries a weight advantage over the third favorite, Sweetwonderfulyou, giving her a strong chance to claim her second win of the season.
Sorrengail made her debut in a competitive maiden at Newmarket’s July Festival, finishing fourth, before reversing form to beat Speed Of Sound at Ascot—who then ran impressively at the St Leger Festival last week. She stayed on strongly over 6 furlongs in her last start at Newbury, narrowly missing out, so stepping up to 7 furlongs seems well suited. Everything points to Sorrengail being tough to beat.

Weleyff disappointed on rain-softened ground at York’s Ebor Festival last month, but today’s conditions should better suit him at Newbury.
Despite starting at 11/2 last time in a Class 2 race, he finished near the rear. Previously, he had back-to-back impressive wins at Ayr and Doncaster, hinting at real ability.
Trainer Ed Bethell’s horse has been dropped 1 pound for that poor run and returns to Class 4, where he was clearly ahead of his rivals in August. I’m not ruling him out; assuming the forecast holds, Weleyff could outclass his opponents today.

3:05pm Ayr – Listed Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes (5½f)
Up north, Lady Youmzain looks well placed to secure Listed success in this competitive sprint.
While Newbury’s surface favors good-to-firm ground, Ayr’s going is softer—ideal for Lady Youmzain, who broke her maiden on soft turf at Beverley last season. The three-year-old may improve after a fresh break, having been off for 97 days. Her earlier season form was patchy, but she was runner-up in a Listed race at Sandown in June with solid form, beating horses that went on to win races at Ayr.

Back at Newbury, Catullus could claim Listed glory for Appleby and Godolphin in this 7-furlong race.
He won decisively at Goodwood in May but has struggled since, finishing below expectations at Royal Ascot and unable to sustain a mile in a Group 3 last month. Dropping back to 7 furlongs should suit the Invincible Spirit gelding, making him a tough contender.

Buick rides three of my selections today (Sorrengail, Weleyff, and Catullus) and holds an excellent record at Newbury, second only to Tom Marquand in winners over the last five years. Keeping an eye on Buick is often a smart move at this track.

River Card impressed on his comeback last month following a near 10-month absence. Despite fading in the final stages, his performance was encouraging.
Handicapped on a mark of 86, he appears well placed to win here. As a juvenile, he bested Maltese Cross—the second-place finisher in this year’s Epsom Derby and winner of major Group 1 races—highlighting his potential. River Card also defeated top-class rivals like Lost Boys. Trainer Brian Meehan’s recent form is strong, with a 25% strike-rate in the last two weeks, further boosting confidence.
