Independent wrestling competitor Ganon Jones Jr. revealed on social media this Thursday that he will be stepping away from the wrestling world in light of the death of “The Butcher” Andy Williams during an indie wrestling event near Pittsburgh. Jones, who wrestled as part of a tag team with Duke Davis against Williams and “The Blade” Braxton Sutter at the Enjoy Wrestling show, shared his decision on Instagram, stating that he had always intended to quit wrestling if his body gave out or if he stopped enjoying the sport.
Jones described September 5th, the date of the event, as “one of the worst nights” of his life and said he has been constantly thinking about Williams and his family. His daughter witnessed the match and the tragic events following it, which deeply frightened her, even sending him a message saying, “I am not letting you do wrestling anymore.” This message became a deciding factor in his choice to pause his wrestling career.
Although Jones hopes this break might not be permanent and he doesn’t feel completely ready to leave wrestling behind, he emphasized that being a father must come first. He encouraged fans to continue supporting wrestling and to cherish their loved ones while they can, remembering Williams as “one of the kindest souls” he had ever met.
Williams collapsed during the match on September 5 and was later declared dead at a hospital in Pittsburgh at just 48 years old.
