Fans who waited to buy tickets for the Commanders-Colts game in London have seen prices drop sharply. The Associated Press reports the NFL reduced face-value ticket costs for Sunday’s matchup after sales lagged, aiming to fill the roughly 62,000-seat Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; about 2,000 seats were still unsold about 10 days before the game when the cuts were made.
When tickets first went on sale, some seats were priced as high as £245 ($325). The league lowered the price on all remaining tickets to £79 ($105), including some premium sections, and is also offering students half-price tickets, AP said. Earlier reductions had already cut upper-bowl seats from £185 ($245) to £115 ($152) before the latest markdown to £79.
The NFL treats each international game as a way to grow its global audience, and visible empty seats would undermine that effort, which helps explain the urgency to sell out the stadium. The move frustrated fans who paid full price: London supporter Andy Burrows told AP the league seems unconcerned about loyal fans so long as the venue looks sold out on television, and he said he hears similar complaints from others regularly. The NFL did not respond to AP’s request for comment.
This match is the first of three London games this season, with additional European contests scheduled in Madrid, Munich and Paris. Sunday’s game will be the 12th NFL matchup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; AP notes none of the previous games there officially logged attendance under 60,000. AP also reported that a Week 5 Eagles-Jaguars game at Tottenham has sold out, while a Week 6 Jaguars-Texans game at Wembley (capacity about 86,000) still had thousands of seats unsold.
Fan Take: Price cuts like this matter because they reveal a tension between maximizing revenue and making games accessible — fans who paid full price understandably feel slighted. If the NFL increasingly relies on last-minute markdowns to fill international venues, it could damage relationships with core supporters even as it chases global growth.
