Kantharos, a consistently top-performing sire, will return to Ocala Stud for the 2027 breeding season, the farm announced today, with his stud fee to be disclosed later. Originally standing in Florida, Kantharos moved to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in 2016—the same year he led Florida’s sire rankings by producing two graded stakes winners, 17 black-type horses, and nine black-type winners, finishing as the state’s second leading general sire behind Wildcat Heir and the top sire of 2-year-olds in Florida.
David O’Farrell of Ocala Stud commented, “We have a strong connection with Kantharos and know his exceptional qualities well. He consistently passes on his outstanding physical traits and early racing ability, proving himself to be a highly productive sire. We believe his future is very promising, making him an excellent choice for Florida breeders, who played a significant role in building his reputation.”
Kantharos is known for siring early-maturing, speedy horses such as Grade 1 winners X Y Jet, who earned over $3 million, and World of Trouble, with earnings exceeding $1.26 million, along with leading young sire Bucchero, who earned nearly $950,000. This year, his offspring include multiple graded stakes winner Lagynos, victor of the Grade 2 Wise Dan Stakes and the Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes, as well as Somerset West, winner of the $1.5 million Grade 2 Music City Stakes and the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes.
Currently ranked 27th among general sires with progeny earnings surpassing $6.1 million in 2026, Kantharos boasts a lifetime average earnings per starter of $100,437 and has sired 120 stakes horses, including 13 graded stakes winners. Purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $250,000 at the 2010 OBS March Sale, Kantharos was a standout juvenile racehorse who remained unbeaten in three starts at age two, claiming the Grade 2 Saratoga Special Stakes by over seven lengths and the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes by more than nine lengths.
By the late Lion Heart, a multiple Grade 1 winner and sire of top horses including Canadian Horse of the Year Uncaptured, Grade 1 Arkansas Derby winner Line of David, and Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Dangerous Midge, Kantharos is out of Contessa Halo, a winning mare by Southern Halo. This makes him a half-brother to graded stakes winner Ikigai and stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Bonifacio.
