Loopy Godinez expresses no ill will when saying it’s fortunate that Zhang Weili is no longer competing in the strawweight division. Ahead of UFC Fight Night 290, Godinez (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) is feeling motivated. Her upcoming main card fight at Meta APEX in Las Vegas against Ketlen Souza (17-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) presents a chance to make her mark in a division increasingly filled with rising talent and fighters gaining momentum.
“I think there’s been some real movement in the division, and I really like it,” Godinez told MMA Junkie Radio recently. “Since Zhang Weili left, there’s definitely been more action—Mackenzie taking over as champ and so many new contenders entering the rankings. It’s exciting to see different names emerging over the years. I’m really thrilled about it.”
At 33, Godinez has become a fan and promotion favorite, staying active and accepting fights against all levels of opponents, even when it doesn’t always go her way. She looks to rebound from a submission loss to Tatiana Suarez in April as she approaches the October 10 event; a win would mark her third victory in four bouts.
“Absolutely. Winning here would be huge for me and everything I’m working for,” she said. “I really feel the UFC appreciates me. They know I’m always ready and willing to fight anyone. I’ve never declined a fight or withdrawn. Luckily, my body has held up well. That’s probably why they like me so much.”
Fan Take: This shakeup in the strawweight division signals an exciting new era filled with fresh rivalries and unexpected contenders, which keeps the sport dynamic for fans. Godinez’s readiness and determination highlight a fighter’s resilience, showing why the division remains compelling and competitive.
