Hansi Flick highlighted the standout feature of Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the Champions League: the impressive defensive performance that secured a rare clean sheet.
Barcelona bounced back in the tournament at Camp Nou on Tuesday, with Lamine Yamal scoring in the seventh minute, setting the stage for their success.
Yamal took advantage of a risky pass from Joao Gomes and expertly placed the ball in the bottom-left corner, making history with his goal.
At just 19, he has now scored 14 goals in the Champions League, surpassing Kylian Mbappe’s record of 13 for the most goals by a teenager in the tournament’s history.
Two goals by Barcelona captain Raphinha in the second half solidified the victory, but Flick emphasized that the defense should receive the most recognition.
This win marked Barcelona’s first clean sheet in the Champions League since a 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in April 2025, breaking an 18-match streak without one. They also maintained an impressive record, having won 11 of their last 13 home games against English teams (with 2 draws).
The team restricted Unai Emery’s side to an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.72 from their nine shots, with only one requiring a save from Joan Garcia.
“What stood out in this match? The clean sheet. I’m really pleased with that because we successfully defended against a strong attack like Aston Villa’s,” Flick said to the media.
“It was crucial. They are an excellent team, and we were satisfied with our defensive display. Everyone gave their best to finish with a clean sheet, and we scored our goals. We’re happy with the outcome.”

Barcelona has managed to score in all but one of their last 20 home matches in the Champions League (W15 D2 L3), totaling 65 goals during that span, averaging 3.3 goals per game.
Furthermore, they have created at least five significant chances in each of their last three Champions League matches, a feat not seen since December 2020.
This result represents Villa’s equal heaviest defeat in major European competitions, having also lost by three goals previously to Royal Antwerp in September 1975 and to Inter in November 1990, both in the UEFA Cup.
Villa’s downfall can be attributed to their own errors, especially Gomes’ mistake that led to Yamal’s goal. No Premier League team has committed more errors resulting in goals this season than the Villans (seven, tied with Sunderland).
However, Flick pointed out that Barcelona’s first goal was a product of their strategic planning, stating, “This reflects our vision for how we want to play football. We aim to press high to force mistakes. We capitalized on that moment, positioned ourselves well, and managed to exploit it.”
Flick also clarified his rationale for substituting Rodri with Marc Bernal at halftime, citing a minor injury concern for the Spaniard. “We took him off because he felt some muscular discomfort. We will assess it further on Wednesday,” Flick explained.
In the world of soccer, Barcelona’s return to form, bolstered by a young talent like Yamal and solid defensive play, signals an exciting shift for the team and its fans. This victory not only reinforces their status in European competitions but could inspire other clubs to focus on youth development and defensive strategy as essential components for success.
