Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay gave an injury update Wednesday. He said defensive end Myles Garrett and tight end Terrance Ferguson returned to practice on a limited basis, while cornerback Jaylen Watson will miss the rest of the season after shoulder surgery.
Garrett has been out since Week 2 following arthroscopic knee surgery and was placed on injured reserve; although the minimum IR stay is four games, he’s now missed seven. The timing was especially unfortunate for fans hoping to see Garrett alongside the newly unretired Aaron Donald, since Donald didn’t make his season debut until Week 2—after Garrett was already put on IR. Depending on how Garrett’s week of practice goes, the pair could finally appear together this Sunday against the Washington Commanders.
Ferguson has also been on IR with an ankle issue and hasn’t played since Week 3. While the Rams have depth at tight end, Ferguson had contributed seven catches for 63 yards and a touchdown before the injury.
McVay confirmed that two players are nearing returns but that Watson’s season is over; after seeking multiple medical opinions the cornerback will undergo shoulder surgery. Watson appeared in seven games, totaling 24 tackles and one interception (against the Buffalo Bills), and is one of four Los Angeles players with a pick this year.
Los Angeles travels to Washington this weekend at 4-4. The Rams began the year as Super Bowl favorites but currently sit third in the NFC West.
Fan take: This matters because the potential reunion of Garrett and Aaron Donald could dramatically boost the Rams’ pass rush and change their defensive outlook if both stay healthy. Watson’s lost season is a reminder that depth and toughness will determine whether Los Angeles can live up to those early expectations.
