Spire Motorsports took the decision to suspend Carson Hocevar earlier on Tuesday, barring him from participating in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Following this, NASCAR imposed its own penalties in response to Hocevar’s repeated aggressive brake checking against Austin Cindric during multiple laps on Sunday’s Martinsville Speedway race. The sanctions include a $100,000 fine and a loss of 25 points.
During the race, Hocevar also spun out intentionally—or at least suspiciously—in an incident that raised doubts among other drivers about his intentions. NASCAR similarly penalized Josh Berry for a brake check on Ryan Blaney that caused damage to the No. 12 car. Berry, driving the Wood Brothers No. 21, was fined $50,000 and docked 25 points. The key difference lies in the nature of their actions: Berry committed one brake check in a corner, whereas Hocevar repeatedly engaged in brake checking on the straightaway despite his spotter Tyler Green urging him to stop.
Hocevar has been under close scrutiny this season, having had several meetings with NASCAR officials over an ongoing conflict with Zane Smith, effectively placing him on probation with the sanctioning body. Additionally, the penalty report confirmed the suspension of James Price and Samuel Wright, crew members from the No. 60 RFK Racing Ford, due to a wheel detachment from Ryan Preece’s car mid-race. These crew members will miss both the 2026 Homestead finale and the 2027 pre-season Clash at Daytona.
Fan Take: This crackdown highlights NASCAR’s commitment to maintaining fair and safe competition, sending a clear message that dangerous on-track behavior won’t be tolerated. For fans, it emphasizes the importance of driver discipline and could lead to cleaner, more thrilling racing in the future.
