Chelsea are looking to continue their policy of recruiting some of the world’s brightest young talents, holding talks with the agent of another exciting South American forward amid rival interest from Tottenham.
The Blues have faced criticism for investing heavily in relatively inexperienced players rather than established stars, but their long-term strategy is beginning to produce encouraging results.
Estevao and Mike Penders have been particularly impressive, with both youngsters delivering standout performances in last week’s victory over Manchester United.
Chelsea’s youth recruitment strategy paying off with Estevao and Penders
Chelsea’s approach to the transfer market has been one of the most discussed aspects of the club’s development in recent years, with the Blues frequently targeting players who are still in the early stages of their careers.
That policy has brought considerable scrutiny, particularly when expensive additions have struggled to make an immediate impact.
However, Estevao and Penders are providing encouraging evidence that the strategy can deliver results.
The Brazilian winger has established himself as one of Chelsea’s most exciting attacking prospects, while Penders has been superb since stepping in for the injured Emiliano Martinez.
Both caught the eye against Manchester United last weekend, offering another glimpse of the quality available to Xabi Alonso as he continues shaping his squad.
Chelsea are now being linked with another Brazilian talent, and their existing connections in the South American market could prove useful in negotiations.
According to Brazilian outlet Bolavip, via Sport Witness, both Chelsea and Tottenham have been in contact with André Cury over a potential January move for Palmeiras striker Vitor Roque, while there is also interest from Manchester United and Everton.
The 21-year-old has rediscovered his goalscoring touch since returning to Brazil following unsuccessful spells with Barcelona and Real Betis.
He has contributed 29 goals and eight assists across 96 appearances for Palmeiras, attracting interest from several clubs hoping to bring him back to Europe.
Crucially for Chelsea, Cury already represents Estevao, having been involved in the winger’s move from Palmeiras to Stamford Bridge. Estevao is the most valuable player represented by Cury’s Link Sports agency, while Roque ranks third, behind midfielder Éderson.
That existing relationship could give Chelsea a useful connection after Cury confirmed that both clubs are pursuing the striker.
Roque’s career so far | Apps | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
Palmeiras | 96 | 29 | 8 |
Athletico Paranaense | 81 | 28 | 11 |
Real Betis | 33 | 7 | 2 |
Cruzeiro | 16 | 6 | 1 |
Barcelona | 16 | 2 | 0 |
Brazil | 2 | 0 | 0 |
Total | 244 | 72 | 22 |
Spurs meanwhile have particular reason to consider another centre-forward, with Richarlison expected to depart in the new year and Dominic Solanke currently their only established specialist option through the middle.
Solanke has scored just once in the Premier League this season, leaving Tottenham short of consistent goals from their central attacking players.
Roque could therefore represent an attractive alternative as the north Londoners consider how to improve their forward line.
However, Palmeiras are in no rush to sell and have reportedly set a minimum asking price of €50m, approximately £44m. With Roque contracted until December 2029, Chelsea and Tottenham could face a substantial challenge in persuading Palmeiras to sanction a January departure.
Xabi Alonso provides Chelsea injury update ahead of Sunderland clash
While speculation continues over Chelsea’s January business, Alonso is preparing his side for an important Premier League trip to Sunderland this weekend.
The Blues will be hoping to build on their victory over United, although there are concerns surrounding the availability of Moisés Caicedo.
The Ecuador international has experienced discomfort since the United game and was unable to complete a normal training programme earlier in the week.
Alonso confirmed on Friday that a final decision on his involvement would be made after Saturday’s training session.
“He’s doing bits and other bits,” the Chelsea manager said when discussing Caicedo’s recovery.
There was more encouraging news concerning Aaron Anselmino, who could be included in the matchday squad as he continues working towards his Chelsea debut.
The young Argentine defender has also received an international call-up, providing a further boost after making progress with his fitness.
“He’s doing everything, and tomorrow [Saturday] we’ll decide, but he could be in the squad, yes,” Alonso revealed. “They (Argentina) asked us and he has been training better for the last ten days, and it’s very important for him have this first call-up.”
With Alonso beginning to see the benefits of Chelsea’s youth-focused recruitment, Anselmino could soon become another young player looking to establish himself at Stamford Bridge.
